As thousands of schools world-wide, we have had to move from face-to-face to online education very quickly. This microsite has been developed as a central point where all relevant resources are so that you can bookmark it for ease of access for students, staff, parents and guardians.
The first of our sister schools closed at the start of February 2020, so we are using some of the materials developed in other UWCs on this site, as well as our own. To the right you will find the principles for remote learning activities developed in Singapore that have guided our own planning.
What is Digital Citizenship?
The state of being skilled in using the internet in order to communicate with others, buy and sell things, and take part in politics, and understanding how to do this in a safe and responsible way.
(The Cambridge Dictionary)
Students need support and guidance in how to use technology appropriately. As they navigate the digital landscape, they face complex issues connected to access to information, online identity, cyber-bullying and self-management. With the line between online and offline life increasingly blurred, these issues often spill over into daily life and can affect student learning in profound ways.
At UWCD, we aim to support students in developing as independent digital citizens. Because experiences online affect school climate, we have built a curriculum using resources from Common Sense Education, a non-profit organisation committed to educating students to become responsible and healthy members of the digital community. Lessons for students, ranging from password safety and digital footprints, to learning how to use tools such as Self-Control or i-Procrastinate to improve study skills, will enhance their ability to navigate the online world.
We have made Digital Citizenship part of our curriculum, delivered in mentor groups during timetabled meeting slots. A pdf version of the lessons can be found below.
