FAQ

How many students participate in the program each year?

Any UW Engineering first-year students is eligible to apply for the program. The program accepts 15-20 students each year. Students from non-engineering majors can also apply for the program.

Is admission to the program competitive? How are students selected?

If more applications are received than there are available spots in the program, applicants will be invited to an informal interview with members of the program staff. Based on application and interview information, students will be selected for the program. More information about the selection process is on the Apply page.

Do we need a visa to participate in the program?

US passport holders can enter Italy for academic purposes for up to 90 days without a visa. The length of this program is less than 90 days, a visa is not required for US passport holders.

If you are a US citizen without a passport, you should plan to apply for one now to ensure you have your passport in hand well in advance of the program.

Keep in mind that Italy is part of the Schengen Agreement which includes more countries in Europe. US passport holders are limited to 90 days within the Schengen area without needing a visa. So when planning any travel before and after the program, be sure that your total time in the Schengen area does not exceed 90 days.

Program participants from other countries should consult the Italian Consulate website to check if they need a visa in order to study in Italy. If you need a study visa to enter Italy for less than 90 days, you must apply to get a Short Stay or “C” type visa. For more information on visas, visit the UW Rome Center Visa page.

Can students travel outside of Rome before or after the program or on weekends and breaks during the program?

Students can choose to travel independently before or after the program. Be aware of the total time in the Schengen area to avoid exceeding the 90 day limit.

Students can plan for independent travel during the program as long as the travel does not impact participation in required program activities. Students should contact the program directors by email in advance of departure with the dates of travel and lodging location.

If you have other questions about the program not addressed here, please contact Mike Engh in the College of Engineering.
