Is admission to the program competitive?

Typically, all eligible students who apply for the program are able to participate.

Do I need to be able to speak Chinese to apply for the program?

No, no prior experience with Chinese is required for the program. HKUST engineering and science are courses are offered in English.

Do we need a visa to participate in the program?

US passport holders can enter Hong Kong for academic purposes for up to 90 days without a visa. Summer exchange students will

If you are a US citizen without a passport, you should plan to apply for one now to ensure you have your passport in hand well in advance of the program.

Keep in mind that France is part of the Schengen area which includes most other countries in Europe. US passport holders are limited to 90 days within the Schengen area without needing a visa. So when planning any travel before and after the program, be sure that your total time in the Schengen area does not exceed 90 days.

Program participants from other countries should consult the website of the French Consulate in San Francisco to check if they need a visa in order to enter French and, if so, what type of visa.
