ACADEMICS

The HKUST School of Engineering has six academic departments: Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CMBE), Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIVL), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE), Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (IELM), and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE). Exchange students are assigned to an engineering department that best matches their home major department.

Students can participate in an exchange for one semester during the academic year or over the summer:

Semester exchange:

  • Students can study for either Fall (between September and December) or Spring (February through May) semester; both semesters are 15 weeks long.

  • Students register for four to six courses for the semester. Students must meet any prerequisites of the respective courses and meet all enrollment conditions.

Summer exchange:

  • Students study for the 8-week summer term between June and August

  • Students register for three courses from a specially-curated list of course offerings. In addition to engineering courses, courses typically offered during the summer exchange program include math, chemistry, and physics.

The typical course assessment is based on a combination of items, which may include class participation, projects, labs, mid-terms and final exams. A final examination takes place at the end of course. Exam schedules are normally announced in the middle of the term. The format of the exams will vary from course to course. The language of instruction is English, except for some humanities and social science courses.

UW Credits

For the HKUST exchange, UW students work with UW departments to review HKUST courses and have them approved for UW credit through a process called credit conversion. It is strongly recommended to review available courses before applying for the program so you know how your study abroad courses will likely count toward your degree requirements. Use the Engineering Study Abroad Credit Pre-Approval Guide to keep track of your planned program courses and the pre-approvals granted by UW departments.

Prerequisites

Students participating in this exchange program must be of Sophomore standing or above at the time of departure and must have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or above.

There are no Chinese language requirements.
