We are pleased to announce that UTTC is the first tribal college to campus to introduce a net-zero greenhouse! Completed in August 2024, the 5,000 square -foot passive solar net-zero greenhouse facilitates year-round production and cultivation. This serves as a valuable resource for students intended for sustainable farming, innovative crops, and to promote food sovereignty.
Additionally, it will support STEM outreach programs within the IRRC.
The physical structure is being constructed with funds from the USDA Land Grant Endowment program to better serve students in the new Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems program with a year round net zero greenhouse. The TSIP project will enhance the capacity of the structure by adding STEM instrumentation, STEM outreach materials and supplies, developing a STEM student space, and improving the STEM classroom.
The location of the structure, adjacent to UTTC’s Dragonfly Pollinator Garden and Community Farm was selected specifically to facilitate outreach. The site is a common gathering space for educational programs throughout the year but offers no type of facilities nearby. The new space will provide wash facilities for vegetables from the garden, bathroom facilities, shade, and protection from the elements on this side of campus.
We broke ground! The construction will continue in the spring with the hope of a fall 2023 opening.
