UTLA Structures


What are Area Assemblies (Meetings)?  Area Assemblies are attended by any UTLA members (you DO NOT have to be a Chapter Chair).  Area Assemblies serve as the policy-recommending body of the union on behalf of union members.  Area assemblies provided a space for all member to have their opinions, ideas and comments considered in the recommendations of policies.  Area meeting also provide space for receiving experience and training in leadership roles.  Finally, Area meetings serve to dispense information among UTLA members and the House of Representatives. What are Area Steering Committees?  Area Steering Committees review the area needs, establish the area budget, and provide inter-area communication and an agenda for area meetings.  It is from the Area Steering Committees that members of the Expanded Bargaining Areas.  The members of the Steering Committees shall be elected at the first meeting of each academic year. (Page 14)

What is the Negotiations Committee (Bargaining Committee)?  The Negotiations Committee serves in bargaining meetings with the Los Angeles Unified School District. (Page 16)

What is the House of Representatives?  The House of Representatives are composed of the Board of Directors, Representatives, Chairpersons of Standing Policy Committees, and Special Policy Committees (2 of which may be counselors). The House of Representatives serve as the policy-making body on behalf of the UTLA Membership. (Page 10-12)
