UTLA School Counselor advocates for the integrity of the school counselor’s appropriate roles and duties respecting 80% of the school counselor’s time to direct and indirect services to students.
UTLA School Counselor advocates for the use of time for at least 80 percent of school counseling duties towards appropriate direct and indirect services to students and 20 percent towards planning and school support. Duties as assigned should remain within the 20 percent of a school support time.
UTLA School Counselor advocates for the respect of appropriate school counseling duties as framed by the A.S.C.A. National model. Inappropriate school counseling duties are fair share, non-counseling duties are assumed by all out-of-the-classroom personnel (A, B & C-basis). UTLA School Counselor advocates for protected time for school counselor’s to prepare and plan their school counseling curriculum and services for at least 1 period per day.
UTLA School Counselor advocates for the integrity of the school counselor's roles in 504, SSPT, IEP, MTSS and any coordination of services meetings, collaboration and activities. School counselors shall not be required to perform duties they have no expertise in and out of their scope and sequence of practice.
UTLA School Counselors in middle school and high school shall not perform in disciplinary duties that are in conflict with their roles as school counselor. For examples:
Roles and duties held by a dean and/or administrator.
UTLA School Counselors shall not function in a teaching credentialed capacity to cover classes.
The UTLA School Counselor Standing Committee Platform was developed by school counselors on October 12, 2023 and voted on November 11, 2023 as the official platform of UTLA School Counselor. It was revised on August 22, 2024.
