Welcome to Math 123!
This course will enable students to solve real-world application problems in business, economics, and everyday situations, such as investing and loans, to improve their decision-making and quantitative reasoning skills.
The student will demonstrate the ability to
(a) evaluate quantitative evidence or
(b) use quantitative or mathematical reasoning to formulate and solve problems.
The student will demonstrate either (a) or (b) through work that identifies, describes, analyzes, and/or applies the knowledge and processes of basic mathematics, mathematical and quantitative expressions, and logical reasoning.
Upon completion of Math 123, you should be able to
Use correct mathematical language and notation.
Solve real-world financial problems (including investments, annuities, and loans) by determining and using appropriate methods.
Solve systems of linear equations using appropriate methods (including graphing, algebraic elimination, matrix row reduction, and matrix inversion).
Perform matrix operations by hand.
Solve linear programming problems using appropriate methods (including graphing and the simplex method).
Set up and interpret payoff matrices and strategy matrices for two-person, zero-sum games.
Apply game theory techniques to determine optimal strategies and the expected value of a game.
Link to specific course objectives and extra practice problems by unit and lesson.
This course is not required for any mathematics degree and, therefore, does not support the department's degree-level learning objectives.
Hi everyone! I'm Professor Ryan, and I am excited to be the Math 123 Course Coordinator. Math 123 is one of my favorite courses because it has so many real-world applications, regardless of your major or future career plans.
I've been a Lecturer at UTK since August 2021 and have taught Math 123 every semester since Spring 2022. Before that, I was a graduate student here from 2016-2020 (so I've been around the University for a while) and then worked for a year in North Carolina for the Greensboro Housing Authority before returning to UTK as an instructor.
Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, trying new restaurants, spending time with friends, and running. I have a Goldendoodle named Henry (pictured) who is the sweetest dog ever!
If you have any questions or concerns this semester as you progress through Math 123, your instructor is a great resource. You're also welcome to contact me (jaryan@utk.edu) or come to my office hours.
