Course Syllabus
Independent Music Studies is a performance-based course designed for students who are enrolled in ongoing private music instruction. This course provides structure and accountability for regular practice, performance reflection, and documented musical growth throughout the semester. Students may participate at any experience level and on any instrument or voice, including music production.
This course does not replace private instruction; rather, it supports and supplements the work completed with a qualified private music teacher.
By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
Demonstrate consistent and responsible independent practice habits
Track and document practice time accurately
Perform prepared repertoire showing musical growth
Reflect musical progress through recorded performances
Communicate effectively with a private music instructor regarding goals and expectations
Students must submit the following information for their private music teacher through the designated Canvas assignment:
Teacher name
Email address
Phone number
Students who do not currently have a private teacher must contact the instructor immediately to develop an alternative plan. Failure to do so may result in loss of credit.
Students are required to practice:
30 minutes per day
5 days per week
150 minutes per week
2,250 total minutes per semester
Weekly practice minutes must be submitted in Canvas by Friday each week. Canvas will cap weekly credit at 150 minutes. Practicing beyond this amount is encouraged but will not increase weekly credit.
Students will submit two performance videos during the semester:
Midterm Performance Video
Final Performance Video
These videos should demonstrate musical progress over time. Specific submission instructions and grading criteria are provided in Canvas. Technical perfection is not required; assessment is based on preparation, effort, and growth.
At the conclusion of the semester, the private music teacher will complete a final evaluation form provided by the instructor. This evaluation will address student progress, engagement, and overall development.
To earn credit for Independent Music Studies, students must complete all of the following:
Private teacher information submitted (or alternate plan approved)
Weekly practice documentation totaling at least 2,250 minutes
Two performance videos (midterm and final)
Final private teacher evaluation submitted
10% – Teacher verification and course discussion
40% – Weekly practice documentation
40% – Performance videos
Midterm: 20%
Final: 20%
10% – Final private teacher evaluation
Students may submit performance videos using one of the following approved methods:
Direct recording in Canvas
File upload from a device
YouTube link
Google Drive or OneDrive link
Students may complete course requirements prior to the end of the term with instructor approval. Early completion must be coordinated with the private teacher and must meet all listed course requirements.
Students are responsible for regularly checking Canvas announcements and email for course updates. Questions regarding requirements, grading, or individual circumstances should be directed to the instructor.
