At VRU Demonstration School, I think the teachers does not believe that the teaching and learning process begins and ends inside the classroom. Even before the class of the students begin, they make sure that they will be present the moment these students arrive in school. They have this practice that they greet each and every student at the gate and make them feel welcomed before they start the day in the school. Luckily, we also got to experience doing this.
After greeting the students at the gate, they will have their flag ceremony before the start of their classes for that day. They always have their Homeroom class as their first subject for the day. I think this is the same case in the Philippines as well, since their advisers would have to remind them about the general things that they should know and do. Sometimes, after the flag ceremony, the advisers would check the proper grooming of the students. They will be given memos that they need to make their parents sign in order for their parents to know that they have violated a school rule.
During my observation, I noticed that the teachers are using worksheets, textbooks, powerpoints, television (to project the powerpoints), drawing pads/tablets to facilitate the teaching and learning process inside the classroom. With this, I also decided to use the same materials as I have seen that these materials are effective in making the lessons easier to understand. As Mathematics is easier to learn using visual materials, I also made use of the whiteboard so that I can illustrate while elaborating more on the topic that I'm discussing. Since the topic that I was discussing was about Geometry, I have to draw certain figures as an example for the students to understand the lesson efficiently.
As we toured around the Demonstration School, I was able to notice that they also have a library where students can read some books and do some research on things they want to know and understand. Additionally, students are also allowed to bring and use their mobile phones whenever necessary and is needed during the discussion. They can have an opportunity to do some research whenever they are in class with those topics that they might find quite challenging.
Based on the observations I had, the teachers give an examination through the use the traditional approach - through pen and paper. They would usually flash/project the questions on the screen and let the students answer it. Moreover, after every discussion, the teachers would usually give the students some activity to answer in order for them to know if they really understood the lesson.
