Santiago
Chile’s capital and largest city, sits in a valley surrounded by the snow-capped Andes and the Chilean Coast Range. Plaza de Armas, the grand heart of the city’s old colonial core, is home to two neoclassical landmarks: the 1808 Palacio de la Real Audiencia, housing the National History Museum, and the 18th-century Metropolitan Cathedral.
Valparaíso
Port city on Chile’s coast. It's known for its steep funiculars and colorful, clifftop homes. La Sebastiana, the quirky former residence of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, is now a museum with far-reaching Pacific views.
Viña del Mar
Coastal resort city northwest of Santiago, Chile. It’s known for its gardens, beaches and high-rise buildings. Quinta Vergara Park is home to the Quinta Vergara Amphitheater, the early-20th-century Vergara Palace and the Artequin Museum, which displays copies of major artworks.
Torres del Paine (TOO FAR - 4 hours by plane - need more time)
Huge national park offering mountain & glacier views, more than 100 bird species, camping & boating.
Punta Arenas (TOO FAR - 4 hours by plane - need more time)
City near the tip of Chile's southernmost Patagonia region. Located on the Strait of Magellan, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, it's often used as base for excursions to the surrounding wilderness and Antarctica. The Plaza Muñoz Gamero has a memorial to explorer Ferdinand Magellan, and the Museo Nao Victoria features a replica of one of his galleons.
Atacama Desert (TOO FAR - 4 hours by plane - need more time)
Far from being a desolate, arid wilderness, the Atacama desert is overflowing with life. Its ancient cultures offer a warm welcome to modern travellers, and fertile oases sustain an astonishing diversity of life here in the world’s driest desert. On the high Andean plateau, you’ll find small villages at up to 4,000 meters above sea level where timeless traditions linger in extreme and wonderfully photogenic settings.
