Attendees will learn best practices for ensuring special education students have access and are supported while in the CTE lab and classroom.
We will discuss the implementation of modifications and accommodations in the CTE classroom and resources to support special education students. Additionally, best practices for para educators in the CTE classroom and lab to support special education students will be shared.
We will also highlight student success and the benefits of CTE for all students in preparing for post-secondary success.
Presenter Details
Dr. Lindsay King is the Director of College and Career Readiness for Maize USD 266, and the Principal of Maize Career Academy. She leads the Maize Career Academy, College and Career Preparation, Individual Plans of Study, Work Based Learning, Career Awareness and Exploration for Pre-K through 12th grade, and Career and Technical Education courses. She is in her 5th year in this position. She wrote her dissertation on the effect of CTE and on-time graduation for English Language Learners and has increased special population access and achievement in CTE course enrollment, graduation, post secondary credits earned while in high school, non-traditional student concentrators, and program placement. She is an Air Force veteran and Air Force Academy graduate.
Cara Poole has been teaching Culinary and Baking classes for Maize at 13 years, plus prior six years experience in another district. She is a ServSafe proctor, has completed five levels of ProStart Teacher Training, and loves to help mentor new teachers.

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) competencies for Sports Medicine courses have recently been updated, and this session will help teachers align their instruction with the new standards.
This workshop will emphasize hands-on practice and instructional strategies for:
Teaching prophylactic taping and allowing students time to practice
Teaching upper and lower extremity special tests
Providing ample hands-on time to practice assessment and taping techniques
We’ll also cover updates to the Sports Medicine II standards and how to incorporate them into your classroom and lab activities.
Whether or not you attended the first Sports Medicine workshop, this session will stand on its own — but returning participants will appreciate the deeper focus on taping, ankle, and elbow assessment techniques.

has been the welding instructor at Southern Tech in Oklahoma for 7 years. He holds 3G GMAW, 6G SMAW, and 1F GTAW certifications and has a Bachelor’s in Technical Education from Pittsburg State University. He spent 25 years in industry before deciding to start teaching.

Four-Day ‘In-Person’ Workshop Fee = $200.00
New CTE Teacher Workshop is designed specifically for new teachers and those who are transitioning from industry to the classroom and have never taught in a formal setting or have very limited experience in teaching.
The workshop focuses on creating a syllabus, writing lesson objectives, teaching techniques, creating student activities, classroom and lab management with an emphasis on teacher liability, accommodations for students with special needs and student assessment.
The ability to build a lesson plan and present information in a logical sequence is critical to the success of a new teacher, and time will be spent practicing these skills.
TOPICS INCLUDE:
Different types of students you will have in your programs.
Use of advisory committees.
Safety and liability issues within CTE Programs.
Developing curriculum.
Dealing with discipline issues.
Developing proper rules and consequences for the CTE lab.
Assessing student knowledge and skill.
Students with special needs.
Other issues that concern new instructors within CTE.
Presenting lessons to students.
Participants will leave with instructional materials that are developed within the workshop, along with valuable information as to how to manage a CTE classroom and lab.
