WRHS Local Memorial Scholarships

The Charles & Marguerite Myers Family offers a $1000 annual scholarship to a graduating WRHS senior with a minimum 2.5 unweighted GPA. Applicants must demonstrate good character, a commitment to the school, and respect for their classmates and teachers. This scholarship is intended for those who are pursuing post-secondary education at a university, community college, or technical institute. Applications will be accepted through February 25. Essay question: Please describe how this scholarship will assist you in reaching your career goals.

This $500 scholarship is awarded to a Washburn Rural High School graduate in honor of Dale Dennis, deputy commissioner of education at the Kansas State Department of Education. A recipient is selected by a committee of staff members based on a ranking of their demonstration of scholarship (3.75 GPA or higher), service, citizenship, and character. The recipient must also be capable of writing a short acceptance speech to be presented during commencement.  Applications will be accepted through March 25. Essay question: What is a lesson you learned during high school and how will that lesson impact your future? 

This $300 scholarship is awarded in honor of a former WRHS graduate, teacher, and coach. A recipient is selected by a committee of staff members based on a ranking of their demonstration of scholarship, citizenship/moral character, and community involvement.  Applications will be accepted through March 25. Essay question: How would your friends describe you? 

Wayne Howbert is a long-time advocate of WRHS and its students. He enjoys following our athletic teams during home games and is offering 2 - $500 scholarships to a graduating male and female student. Applications will be accepted through March 25. Essay question: In 5 years, what do you hope to have achieved? 

This scholarship will award one student with $1000. To be eligible for this scholarship the student must complete a 300 word personal essay describing a time when they were able to overcome adversity in their life. Applications will be accepted through March 25. Essay question: Describe a time in your life when you faced adversity and how you overcame it. 

This scholarship will be award one student $1000. To be eligible for this scholarship the student must complete a 250 word essay, have a 3.0, and be pursuing a career in either the Medical, Science, Forestry, or Education Field. Applications will be accepted through March 25. Essay question: What is motivating you to pursue a career in the field you have chosen? 

Kenneth Forsythe Memorial Scholarship 

This scholarship of $500 will be awarded to one student in honor of former WRHS music teacher Kenneth Forsythe. To be eligible, the student must be involved in the WRHS choir program. Applications will be accepted through March 25. Essay question: How has the WRHS choir program impacted you? 

The bus drivers of USD 437 offer a $1000 scholarship annually to a graduating WRHS senior. The first half is paid once the student has enrolled for the Fall semester and the second half will be paid when enrollment has been completed for the Spring semester. Selection is made on the basis of financial need, educational goals, and career objectives. Applications will be accepted beginning February 1 through March 25. Essay question: Briefly describe your career objectives and why you are choosing this career.

Any graduating senior from Washburn Rural High School who is interested in pursuing a degree in the field of education has the opportunity to apply for this scholarship (amount varies year to year). Applications beginning April 22 through May 3, 2024. Write and attach a typed letter to the Education Scholarship Committee. This letter should explain why you want to pursue a career in the field of education and what you will have to offer in such a career. Return completed applications and attachments to your counselor. 

The Auburn-Washburn Foundation is sponsoring a scholarship for students attending Washburn Tech this semester to help pay for supplies and materials.  Juniors and Seniors may apply.  Applications can be turned in to Mr. Wetzel.  Deadline is Sept 27th.  The amount of scholarship has not yet been set. The following scholarships are available to WRHS Seniors only from the Topeka Community Foundation. More information about these scholarships is available on their website. These scholarships require a completed application and 2 letters of recommendation. They are available beginning November 1 through February 5. Awards will be announced during the last week of March and a scholarship reception will be held April 16.
