Welcome to MMS 100, Introduction to Multimedia Studies! By the end of this course, you should be able to do the following:
Discuss key concepts relating to multimedia studies and describe different ways of understanding the different subject areas that you will be studying in BAMS
Discuss the basic technical foundations of multimedia
Discuss basic considerations when producing and creating multimedia content
Provide examples that illustrate how multimedia affects individuals and societies
This course package was authored by Diego Maranan. Don't be surprised if at times throughout the course, you will see him (or rather, me!) using the first-person perspective when addressing you.
There are no course prerequisites to MMS 100.
Since this course is only only available in this online format, you should have access to the World Wide Web. You are welcome to print the webpages from your computer, save them as PDF files, or download the modules in whatever format is useful for you. Please note however that streaming video embedded on the page (e.g., YouTube videos) and other embedded interactive media will not be downloaded to your computer.
Treat this course package like a textbook: just as a teacher may not require you to read all the chapters of a regular textbook, your FIC may ask you to read some sections of this course package but not others. Follow your FIC's course outline, which they will likely present in the virtual learning environment for the course, which at UPOU is MyPortal.
Use the menu on the left to view the units and modules for this course and to navigate this site. Some of the links in the menu are nested inside other links; click the triangular icon to expand a menu item and reveal nested links.
The search bar at the top of the site can also help you locate content.
Throughout the course, readings from the World Wide Web and from excerpts in books and journals will be assigned. Some excerpts will are saved as PDF files, and some of them are password protected. If you cannot open a file because it is password protected, the password should have been posted on MyPortal.
Throughout this course package, links to other resources are embedded in the text. The uniform resource locators (URLs) for these links are presented in two ways:
Integrated in the text, like this
Explicitly spelled out, like this: http://sites.google.com/a/upou.edu.ph/mms100
There can be quite a number of these links embedded in the text. When you come across a link, don't feel compelled to click on them right away. One technique that works for some students is to read an entire module first before clicking any of the embedded links. In fact, unless the links are part of a module activity, you should consider those links optional reading. You can come back to them at any time, maybe even after the course is finished. The following is an example of what an activity looks like.
Allot 75 minutes
Since MMS 100 is one of the very first courses you will be taking in BAMS, you may find that studying at the UPOU is quite different from from studying in a traditional, "residential" setting.
To help you succeed as a distance learner, read the collection of articles I have prepared under a section of my website called Advice for new UPOU students.
Make sure to do all the activities or quizzes that are embedded in each of articles.
If any of the links or embedded resources are not working, please report them by using the link provided at the bottom of each page.
If you have questions about or problems with MMS 100 try the following in order:
Visit the MyPortal site for the course and review the announcements from the FIC
Visit the MyPortal site for the course and review questions that your classmates may have posted on the discussion forums; if you have a question that you can't answer yourself, chances are that one of your classmates has had a similar concern.
Email your tutor (if the course has one).
Email the FIC.
For technical concerns regarding MyPortal, request for technical assistance on the ICTDO website.
