Visual Arts HL - Exhibition Component
Anna Larissa Beetz - Meet you there
I was inspired by the song “Das ist dein Leben '' by Philipp Dittberner which reflects on how we can't control everything in life, have to take risks but always have a sense of home/belonging in the world. Growing up internationally, the concept of home and heritage is something that I always struggled with as a ‘3rd culture kid’. With “Bonded” I was able to reflect on some of my Heritage. Home is the sense of belonging and where you feel the most comfortable; for me, the ocean/water would also be considered home. Water metaphorically stands for our life. The dynamics of water, being able to convey all sorts of emotions and the changes and pathways it can take are remedies of this.
I grew up around water - always being present and one of my happy core memories is going swimming/freediving with my dad in the ocean for the first time, which is reflected in “Childhood”. These two works are the only including human-like figures within the pieces, both representing/showing me. I always found the ocean intriguing and mysterious even with having multiple accidents, such as getting my oxygen tank closed 20m underwater while diving. Whenever we enter a body of water, we always expose ourselves to risk as water can’t be controlled similarly to life, which is reflected in “Rising”. I have 2 perceptual pieces with “Rising” and “Childhood” in my exhibition, allowing the audience to explore their own emotions towards the water. Similar to art, which can be used to awaken many emotions, which are explored within all my pieces.
Water is similar to us - Reflecting on how we are the same but also not - every experience, every choice made by us or others, risk good or bad - we change. This is similar to Waves as they follow the same pattern but aren’t the exact same. I explored this within “Coming back” and “To myself”. Within these pieces, my painting style was heavily influenced by April Gornik. She manipulates her landscapes slightly by changing the tones to convey different emotions. “Devil's Bridge” oppositely completely removed all colours in order to investigate the relationship between colour and emotion. “Ocean of three” is a representation of the simplicity of her work with landscapes through which the tones are not altered; the composition is, by elimination of any unnecessary/other objects, to showcase the simplicity.
My installation conceptually links the above together. Through the figure, I’m putting myself at risk. It explores the emotions of the audience, but also the artist, whenever a string is cut. Similarly, it reflects on the idea of how small things can change you similar to “Coming back” and “To myself” but in this, showing what happens when these small changes and things add up, causing a bigger reaction. The weight reflects when everything boils over and the wave finally breaks or in this case the Doll/myself.
I explored different materials throughout my investigation such as driftwood, ceramics and seashells such as in “Abrasion”. The material's impact and influence the meaning of the piece; “Drifting” with driftwood- as it is the sense of travel/going home is explored through the material. I predominantly used acrylic as I like the quality of the pigmentation and colour vibrancy and trueness I can achieve within it.
My installation “Bonded” is the first viewpoint, as it requires the active participation of the audience. I have placed “Rising” centrally as it is my biggest and perceptual-piece drawing in the eye first. It also requires space to move around, allowing the bubbles to ‘come alive. “Drifting” is elevated to allow the audience to engage and touch and feel the natural carvings of the wood. I placed the pieces that require a shorter angle together, such as “Abrasion” and “Childhood” at the beginning of the wall. When the audience first looks it sees the bigger pieces and then can come in to explore those in detail such as the dog or boat in “Ocean of three”.
1. Bonded:
Mixed Media: Ceramics, acrylics strings, acrylic sheets and metal weight
- 111cm x 106 cm x 204 cm -
This piece was inspired by Marina Abramovic's performance “Rhythm 0”. She allowed her audience to do anything to her with 72 chosen objects. She physically put herself at the hands of her audience to find out how they would act. Similar to this intention; the Matryoshka I made represents me. I am opening up myself to the actions and decisions of others. It is out of my hand if they choose to cut the strings, but if they choose to, they have to live with their decisions similar to the real world.
2.Childhood:
Watercolor on Paper - 36 cm x 26 cm -
Showcases one of my earliest and favourite memories of going freediving with my dad for the first time. It represents and reminds me of the happy times of what it truly means to be a kid. Kept in vibrant colors to resemble the importance of the memory. The water does not indicate if the figure is going up or down adding to the personal mystery. The angle of viewpoint allows for the viewer to be set directly behind the figure, allowing them to deep dive inside as well and get lost in the water.
3. Abrasion:
Acrylic on seashell - 12.5 cm x 10 cm -
Shells are remedies of the life they once held. Over time it has changed, been broken and adapted. The natural patterns and growth remind of a cliff, breaking the water and it contains such as the shell once was broken. The incomplete shell reflects on how we are never fully perfect and whole. The rigging sharp edges and the matter of the crashing waves onto the rock reflect on our internal conflict - the water is not always calm but can rage up such as ourselves once pushed towards the cliff.
4. Rising
Acrylic on Canvas - 120 cm x 120 cm -
Within the Ocean we never know what to expect, similar to our real-life - Sometimes getting stuck at the ‘bottom of the ocean’. We need a light to guide us back to the top and back into life. Within the perceptive piece, as we move around, the bubbles become alive and dimensional as they catch the light. This piece can be calming for some but for others, it's their greatest fear. The great emotional disparities and unknowing feelings create this piece.
5. Devils Bridge
Acrylic on Canvas - 77 cm x 77 cm -
Colors can help bind with artworks as colors represent emotional connections. Though is it that we can only see or feel clearly when the color is removed? This artwork has a clarity that reflects. Water can be clear, cloudy or reflective. Similarly, Reflection is important in our life - we sometimes do it unintentionally, but other times if we don't we risk exposing ourselves to risks that could have been avoided. We learn from past experiences and therefore shape our mindset.
6 Ocean of three
Acrylic on canvas - 1: 30 cm x 46 cm, 2: 60 cm x 46 cm, 3: 30 cm x 46 cm -
The minimalist and simplicity of the composition allows for reflection. The dog is sitting and looking ahead, the sailboat has its sail down, simply gliding on the water. All show the same movement but the side pieces include a form to showcase the central pieces and that in the end, the simplicity is the true natural beauty of the ocean.
7.Drifting:
Acrylic and Watercolour on driftwood - 20 cm x 78 cm -
Is a sensory exploration, the color visualizes the physical - the wood's natural elements. The natural carvings the water has made on its pathway throughout the time, shaped it, rigid it and smoothed it. If you would like, close your eyes and simply take your time to feel the wood - let it tell you its story. The water and the Driftwood speak for themselves, therefore the color used is only minimalistic and thin to let the material show.
8. Coming back:
Mixed Media - Acrylic and oil on canvas - 51 cm x 41 cm -
This piece was inspired by April Gornik - she alters the natural tones within her pieces to convey a certain emotion, leading to more surrealistic pieces. Within the piece, I have adapted the tones of the paint to enhance the ocean to bring it to life. Furthermore, making the piece more dramatic through the bright and vibrant colors. The reversed gradient that therefore is enhanced and contrasted gives in an uneasy setting and questions our preconceptions of the landscape.
9. To myself:
Acrylic on wood - 51 cm x 41 cm -
Is a simplistic surrealistic wave feature reflecting on “Coming back” - as they are remedies of waves that only occurred minutes apart. Raising the question of if it is the same or not? Same ocean, same water but truly same wave? Form, color, movement and power? Similar to us, we might look the same, but under the surface be completely changed, maybe without even noticing. We only realize it when it is large, but the small changes we make reflecting on our life decisions shape us daily.
