DP Theatre - Solo Theatre Pieces
The Solo Theatre Piece is the culminating assessment of the HL DP Theatre course. Students are required to choose an established Theatre Theorist to study before focussing in on a particular aspect of their work and then extrapolating that theoretical and practical research into a 4-8 minute solo performance. Each of the four students below chose a different theorist to study and the four pieces are all very different in context and tone.
Theorist - Josef Kantor
Julius chose to present Kantor's theories through a reworking of a speech from Shakespeare's "Richard III" . Richard's self-confidence is portrayed as losing the battle to his self-doubt as he is haunted by those he has killed.
Theorist - Augusto Boal
Amrita uses Boal's "Newspaper Theatre" theory to portray multiple perspectives on the death penalty debate in Malaysia.
Theorist - Tim Etchells
Aoife applied her scriptwriting and performance skills to Etchells' theories of narrative construction in this unique retelling of the fairytale of "Little Red Riding Hood".
Theorist - Jerzy Grotowski
Justin used elements of Grotowski's theory of Poor Theatre to tell a very personal story, centred around his experiences as a student in the IBDP program.
