This year’s Independence Day unfolds under the shadow of political turmoil. The ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte has laid bare the deep fractures in our democracy; a system marred by impunity, dynastic control, and a culture of fear masquerading as order.

The Voice of UPLB Development Communicators’ Society believes that true independence is not merely the absence of foreign rule but the active presence of justice, transparency, and accountability. As corruption, misuse of funds, and abuse of power swirl around the second-highest office in the land, the Filipino people must rise not just to watch, but to act.

Today, let the parades remind us not only of the past we honor but of the future we must demand. A future where independence means full freedom from corruption, impunity, and political violence, no matter how powerful the names involved.

The fight for independence did not end in Kawit. It continues in the halls of Congress, in the streets of protest, in the hearts of those who believe that freedom must be obtained in all forms.
