Living the Things My 8-Year-Old Brain Imagined
My 8 years old self is surely proud seeing himself as a 21 years old taking BA in Multimedia Studies at the University of the Philippines. Ever since I was a kid, I have always competing with my older brother on how to take photos using our first DSLR camera. I thought it was just a normal thing taking random pictures on anything you see. Who would have thought that a kid who loves painting will see himself pursuing photography in his present self. It is related to art but in a different art style. Now that I am in my college years, I am literally excited taking BAMS but I am more excited studying photography.
Photography is not just about taking pictures, but it is about how you tell stories and how you make pictures turn into wonderful memories. A lot of things will happen in your life and in reality you can’t turn back the time. With the help of pictures, it captures a lot of beautiful moments wherein it reminds you of stories in your life. Now that I am taking MMS 173, I am literally ready to share what I captured from before that I can share to my coursemates. In fact, taking this course was just full of excitement, no expectations from everything. I am just more focused on how I will learn different styles of photography from my classmates and especially from our professor. It is truly amazing to see and inspire from others' work rather than comparing yourself to others. That’s why from our recent Assignment number 2 which was about knowing where you’re at. This was one of my favorite assignment for this course, because you are required to see others' work. It is your time to criticize their works and explain your feedback not just to judge them but to see if there are things that you’ve learned from this course. While scrolling with their works, from being confident with my photos, I realized that it is also important to see others perspectives when it comes to art. I believe that each person has their own art style and usually we are focused on what we like without even exploring different styles. However, when I saw their work I was literally amazed by their talent. They literally showed me different stories on how they took the shot. I always remember the saying “A picture has a thousand words” and it is true but it is also important to know the story behind their works in order to understand what is something behind this photo.
With this course, I am more excited to do tasks and willing to learn more. I am just feeling pressured to attend face-to-face classes because I have work. Still, I know that as long as you’re doing your best in every activities you will get what you deserve. I am looking forward to more activities that will help us hone our photography skills and let the people who’s not inclined into photography to love taking pictures.
But before ending this reflection, I would like to suggest some activities for us to enjoy this course more. Maybe we can have a weekly phototask and their will be students who will be featured with their works in order to boost them and their classmates to do their best when passing the phototasks. It is exciting to have this to test their creativity and inspire others' work because there will be photos of the week. Another suggestion, if you can give us tasks wherein will test our creativity, there will be a specific photography style that we need to do so that we will not just use our old photos but we need to pass recent pictures that we literally shoot just for this assignment. In order for us to explore more from different styles of photography, whether this is a portrait, landscape, sports photography, street photography, and many more.
To end this reflection, I would like to say thank you for letting us see others' work and having time to reflect on our work. In fact, it is very important to have reflection from yourself and others because it is easy to learn when you explore and see others' work rather than working alone which limits your creativity. I am looking forward to seeing my classmates' works and getting inspired from their works and stories, especially from our professor. Thank you and look forward to learning more with all of you. Goodluck to all of us and hopefully we can see each other soon.
