The special project will be conducted at Merrybells Preschool, a private school in Cainta, with classes for Nursery, Kinder 1, and Kinder 2. It is a singular building, a house renovated into a classroom. It was a convenient 30-45 minute drive from our house. The Kinder 1 and Kinder 2 classes share the main room as their classroom, while the nursery students have a separate room. There is also a small yard in the front with some playsets. The primary classroom has the appropriate tools and materials needed for learning, such as a tables, chairs, mats, Smart TV, a whiteboard, and shelves and cabinets for storage. There is also sufficient lighting and ventilation, as well as air conditioning.
During those three days, I focused on observing the students' learning habits and patterns, and I also had the opportunity to build cordial relationships with them. I assisted Mrs. Beula and taught the kids alongside her, helping them with activities and lessons. During this time, she also let me know of the students' strengths and weaknesses in their learning. After this short period of observation, I then decided to ask Mrs. Beula for permission to conduct my lesson plan with this group of students, which she agreed to.
My assigned group, Kinder 1, consists of five boys and six girls. The students' age ranges from five to six years old. This group of students is outgoing and was eager to spend time with me as I helped them with their homework. Though easily distracted, they still listened to my instructions when asking them to correct their work or finish their tasks. Only one of the students was falling behind in her studies, as she struggled to study at home due to not being disciplined enough to focus in that environment.
Overall, the students are able to portray their understanding of their lessons, they only require redirection when distracted which happens often due to their short attention spans. They are also kind and show emotional intelligence as well, showing concern for one another and their teachers as well.
Merrybells, being a preschool, focuses on honing its learners' knowledge to ensure they are prepared to enter Grade 1. Mrs. Beula particularly notes that she wants to ensure that the students are educationally prepared to enter bigger schools such as Ateneo and La Salle. Students in Merrybells are given worksheets and workbooks to answer, with Mrs. Beula's lessons and curriculum following the sequencing as presented in the workbooks. Activities are often hands-on with students exploring both inside and outside the classroom. Lessons and activities are mostly adjustable due to the small number of students.
Throughout my time at Merrybells, I was able to connect with the students on a personal level. I got to know them better, gaining a deeper insight into their personalities and learning preferences. My findings revealed that many students struggled to focus and frequently became distracted. Despite this, the students demonstrated intelligence, especially when given sufficient attention; some were able to answer questions independently. The ranges of their attention span varied, but overall, they all had trouble paying attention over long periods. I also spoke with Mrs. Beula, and she noted that some students are professionally diagnosed with ADHD. At the same time, some children may be undiagnosed but have been exposed to excessive screen time, making it difficult for them to maintain attention for extended periods. I could relate to these students as I saw traits of myself in them: difficulty focusing, being talkative, and even spacing out when doing homework. That only encouraged me further to make an instructional plan that could ensure that the students stay motivated while studying.
The lesson plan was created with the ADDIE model to take advantage of its flexibility when doing curriculum development. Gamification was integrated into the learning as well, to create a motivational and fun learning experience. Multiple Intelligences Theory was also used due to the students' varying levels of intelligence and inattentiveness. Canva was used to create an interactive slideshow for the lesson plan.
