LESSON 1: THE BASICS OF VISUAL AND GRAPHIC DESIGN
Welcome to the first lesson for Visual and Graphic Design!
Nowadays, visual and graphic design is more than meets the eye. Visual and graphic design is now a means of communicating through illustrations and photography, meaningful typography, evocative color schemes, comforting spacing, and accessible layout execution.
This lesson provides an overview of the basic concepts, elements, and principles of visual and graphic design. Through this, learners are equipped with the knowledge in making visually appealing posters and materials, and in using design elements to effectively convey their messages.
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
Enumerate at least five (5) basic design elements and principles of design;
Discuss the seven (7) basic design elements and the nine (9) basic principles of design; and
Explain the importance of basic design elements and its principles in making visually appealing materials.

Have you ever marveled at a poster or a billboard, and wondered how it became so visually appealing? Striking and impactful design does not happen by chance. Visual and graphic designers work overnight to get the right amount and combination of various design elements to make the overall visual stand out.
Before being able to do so, you need to know the basic design elements, and the role they play in visual design. Understanding the fundamentals of design is the first step to creating cohesive and harmonious visuals. These seven design elements are: lines, shapes, colors, typography, images/illustrations, texture, and space.
Understanding the principles of design saves visual artists from the trouble of trial and error in creating something that both looks good and creates an optimal user experience.
Basic design principles include: contrast, emphasis, balance, hierarchy, white space, and rhythm.

In summary, this lesson discussed the basic design elements and its principles. We tackled the appropriate use and importance of each element in designing our publication materials. This includes typography and color wherein we differentiated the various types of fonts and the many connotations associated to colors. We learned about the basic design principles that saves many artists from trouble of trial and error in creating something that is visually attractive.
