MMS 172 BLOG 2
It was a challenging yet rewarding experience. I began this course with a deep interest in music, as mentioned in my Self-Introduction. Although I consider myself a music enthusiast, I had limited technical knowledge, which made it initially overwhelming to understand the complexities of audio production—of how a sound signal is captured, converted into audio, and played back, along with the influence of acoustics and equipment on this process. I'm grateful that with the help of Prof Al's pieces of advice and the insights I gathered from my classmates' outputs, I was able to accomplish the course requirements. I learned, not just a thing, but several lessons I could use in my future engagement with audio production. Nonetheless, I wanted to say that the course may end here but I suppose my journey in audio will continue from this point.
I have said in my mid-course blog that I expected this course to be challenging because of my lack of equipment and necessary skills regarding audio production. I maintain my assertion that audio production cannot be mastered and done overnight and that an individual must invest in his equipment and knowledge to produce decent outputs. This is because of the problems I encountered during this course. I first pointed out the need for an upgrade in my recording equipment since I was only using my Realme 6 Pro smartphone as my device. While I have addressed this already since I bought a good to decent condenser microphone, another problem has still occurred, this time, it was regarding my instrument. I have already borrowed an electric keyboard from my cousin since it was part of the proposed plan, however, I wasn't able to utilize it for a recording and gave it back after a few days because it will be used in their music club. Second, my acoustic guitar seemed unconducive to finish my project since it has been producing out-of-tune sounds even though I prepared and tuned it properly. I believe it is due to its oldness—worn frets and old tuning pegs. It is quite late to change plans at that point, plus, I really wanted to do a song cover of Cup of Joe, any of their songs that's why I pursued this path even if the said problem would affect the final output. I hope my work meets the expectations set by Prof. Al and my classmates. Now, I'd say audio production is heavily influenced by logistics. The interdependence of recording equipment, environment, process, and sound source plays a crucial role in the quality of the output.
I observed that the class comprises both enthusiastic students and those who complete tasks out of obligation. There are also categories of students with sufficient equipment and students who lack equipment. With this, I consider myself someone interested in knowing how audio is being produced practically and technically, due to my inclination to music, but lack in equipment and instruments to do a decent one. While my project was affected by the age of my acoustic guitar, I am confident that I applied the critical lessons I learned from this course in all my activities. Starting from the acoustics of the room, mic positioning and placement, as well as post-production adjustments. Overall, I deem my performance in this course in a good to decent category.
Audio is crucial for creating immersive and engaging multimedia experiences, making it a key component in delivering messages clearly and powerfully. For a BAMS student and practitioner like me, understanding audio production techniques enhances my ability to produce multimedia materials that resonate with audiences, ensuring that the intended message is communicated effectively and persuasively. This means that I see myself continuing the pursuit for better audio production, not just because of my inclination to music, but mainly to produce efficient multimedia materials in the future. Also, this course has been insightful and helpful. Prof Al's feedback on my activities, not just mine but also his remarks on my classmates in the forums, and the activities we had which were challenging yet engaging, was all beneficial. I just hoped that we, a 6-member group I joined, were able to finish Bonus Activity 4. It'd be something that I'll look back on in the future, a result of what we obtained from this course. Anyway, as I've emphasized earlier, the course may end here but my journey in audio will continue from this point. I’m looking forward to improving my audio skills and the knowledge I’ve gained here, as learning is a continuous process.
