Laboratory Animal Use

Laboratory Animal Use and Care

The BRSL supports the humane and ethical treatment of laboratory animals in research in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act (RA 8485) and the Department of Agriculture Administrative Order No. 40 (AO 40) otherwise known as the Rules and Regulation on the Conduct of Scientific Procedures Using Animals. The Laboratory Animal Workshop conducted twice a year by the laboratory serves as the UP Diliman Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (UPD IACUC) training program for UPD researchers, faculty, students and other laboratory personnel as a requirement prior to doing experiments using laboratory animals. The workshop includes lectures on animal welfare, care and management, occupational health and safety in the animal facility, protocol review process and experimental design and analysis while the practical hands-on exercises allow the trainees to learn the proper methods of restraining, gavaging, drug administration, blood glucose determination and blood and tissue collection. This pioneering workshop has served not only UP but also other schools, government institutions and industry.
