In the superhero genre, discussions of trauma tend to focus on the stories of male superheroes such as Batman, Punisher, and Daredevil. It is only with the popularity of the Jessica Jones series in Netflix that critics and scholars started paying attention to how trauma is embodied by female superheroes.
In the same vein, this presentation expands the discussion of Darna by asking how a nation’s collective trauma is worked out in popular culture, specifically in the Darna movies produced by Viva Films in the nineties: Darna (1991) starring Nanette Medved and Darna: Ang Pagbabalik (1994) starring Anjanette Abayari. These movies transform the unrepresentable aspects of trauma into something visible and tangible. In both films, the stories, Narda’s and Darna’s characterizations, and the themes illustrate how women’s bodies are subjected to the horrors of violence, aggression, and abuse. This is reminiscent of the gender politics that surrounded the administration of former President Corazon Aquino as she dealt with numerous coup d’état that was instigated by the military and the country’s shock and helplessness in the aftermath of the Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991.
In the end, despite their escapist and entertainment function, Darna stories serve as a reminder that superhero stories are vehicles for understanding and making sense of trauma. These movies can also provide Filipinos with an accessible psychic and cultural tool to come to terms with the lessons of the past and a way for Darna stories to remain relevant in contemporary times.

The Department of Broadcast Communication stands in solidarity with journalists who continue to perform their duty as truth-tellers.
ABS-CBN correspondent Chiara Zambrano’s commendable coverage of the West Philippine Sea dispute and its effects on Filipino fisherfolk exposes the injustice being committed in our own territory. The statement from the Armed Forces of the Philippines blaming a “journalist’s insatiable desire to be ahead in reporting,” is distorted reasoning in the face of this crisis. Such statements make it seem like the Filipinos are unsafe in their own territory, and their right to know is unimportant. We support the call for more media coverage in the West Philippine Sea for Filipinos to gain a better perspective about the issues surrounding these disputed waters, with the assurance that journalists are protected, their rights and the rights of Filipinos to know, are upheld.

Dearest Students,
It is with much pleasure that I share with you some good news: our Department was granted limited slots for Adobe Creative Cloud (Adobe CC) for one year!
This was an important item on the Department’s list of needs for remote education during the pandemic. The OVCAA worked closely with the College and the Department to acquire this suite of software for our production classes. This will allow us to offer other courses with intensive production needs as well.
Photoshop
Premiere Rush
InDesign
and all other software designed by Adobe!
Visit the Adobe Website.
Click Sign In.
Create a new user profile/account.
Enjoy access to more than 20 kinds of software.
You can check out the website by clicking the Adobe Creative Cloud logo below:
Because the slots are limited both in number and duration, the Department would like to spread out the access to as many members of the student body as possible by. Essentially, we need to take turns using the licenses. Therefore, the Department is instituting guidelines for this purpose.
BC Department Distribution Guidelines for Adobe Creative Cloud
1. All students and instructors in production courses offered this semester will get access to Adobe CC until June. All students in all sections of BMAS 111 and BC 148 will automatically be assigned licenses.
2. Remaining slots will be opened to all other students via a sign-up sheet. There are 20 slots left and these are up for grabs. However, signing up does not guarantee you will get the license. The Department’s Curriculum Committee will have to assess your needs based on the courses you are enrolled in this semester. If the Committee decides to grant you the access, you will receive notification from the Department.
3. At the end of the semester, access to the licenses will be revoked, and then reassigned at the beginning of the following semester to all those taking production courses.
4. Those who were given access for this semester have to sign up for Adobe Creative Cloud Licenses, click on this link to a Google Form:
We are working closely with the UP Computer Center regarding the mechanics of assigning the licenses and training on how to use these. Please keep posted for announcements through the website, FB page, and via the student reps of the Department.
The arrangements might seem a little unwieldy, but it’s the best we can do for now with what we have. With your help, we hope to make the most of these licenses, and make a case for our programs’ need for this software. Most of all we look forward to the projects that the software will allow you to do.
Thank you, everyone, and you will hear from us again soon.
