What does your research focus on?
Having worked for media for most of my professional life, I found meaning in doing research work that is very close to my first love – media work. When I was working on my postgrad, most of the work that I did were focused on understanding the dynamics of the media industries in the country. My research specifically focused on labor issues in media and the press freedom situation in the Philippines. As I plan on expanding my research work in the future, I really hope that I get to do a significant work that will create an impact to the larger community.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently swamped with school work haha, doing my regular teaching load, as well as administrative and extension tasks for the department and the university. I am also working with an NGO, wherein we will soon launch a project on the 2022 Presidential Elections. It’s actually a podcast series for the Gen Z and millennials. This endeavor is a project that I’m doing as part of my scholarship program. Apart from these, I’m now preparing for my PhD application, and hopefully, I’m looking forward to starting my doctorate by next year!
What is it you like best about teaching?
It was never really in any of my plans to pursue a teaching career. In graduate school, all I wanted to do was to finish my degree and go back home. But the universe had a different plan! During my masters, I received an offer from one of my professors to teach her undergrad classes. I was reluctant at first but I said yes, and the rest as they say is history. Every time I’d do classes, I would really enjoy interacting with my students. It also brings me joy knowing that I’ll learn from my students and that I get to teach them something that I’m passionate about. What really makes me happy is seeing my students succeed in life!
What do you like to do when you're not working?
When it’s not a work day at home, I would play video games or watch a movie or series on Netflix or HBO. And since I live alone, I enjoy cleaning my flat. I also like doing grocery and online shopping! As much as possible, I always want to chill when I’m not working. There are also times when I would drive to a random café, stay there and observe people.
What three adjectives would people use to describe you?
Three adjectives that people would usually describe me are: independent, open-minded and easy-going. Independent, maybe because my friends know that ever since I started college, I’ve always been away from my family who are based in Bulacan. I’m open-minded because I’m open to new ideas and perspectives. I believe that we can thrive in life if we are open to all possibilities. And, yes, I’m an easy-going person but I’m a hard worker and a perfectionist.
