For my final project, I produced a podcast episode called "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" which stars my two Gen X parents playing against my two Gen Z friends. I have previously played this game on game nights with my friends, and it is always a hit with the group I play with. I did this for my final project because I enjoyed playing the game, and it was a moment to bond with my friends and family and present five different voices.
For my preparations, I gathered and tested my materials, coordinated my guests, and Prepared the recording set up. The first thing I did was find and filter questions online to topics that I knew both teams had a chance of knowing. I gathered the questions from a BuzzFeed list of "113 "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader" Questions To Stump Your Adult Friends." I also gathered the two microphones I used, the Maono PD2000X and Maono PM421, connected to my phone and laptop to record simultaneously. I did a test run a few days before to ensure everything was in working order and was set for my recording day. After confirming everything was I working order I invited my friends over and reserved my parents time in order to be able to have two members per generational team.
The recording was done in the dinning room of my house with each team getting their won microphone
The sound effects and and hosting/narrarator audios were recorded on a different day in my Lola's house
The project which was edited using Reaper contains six tracks, three of which are background noises. The first track is a recording of my voice acting as a host to the game. The second track is the recording of Tean Gen Z, aka Roxy and Sab, who are both 20-year-old third-year college students. The third track is the recording of Team Gen X, which consisted of my parents, Dennis and Ines, who are 59 and 56, respectively.
Track 1: "HOST"
The host track has the most Fx, namely ReaFir, ReaEQ, ReaComp, ReaXcomp, and ReaVoice. This track was also recorded at a separate time and place, which is why I placed the most effects on it to try and make it match the other speaking tracks as much as possible. I significantly lowered the frequency, gain and bandwidth in the ReaEQ Fx to remove the higher tone that the recording has. I also applied a Compressor Fx to raise the wet outmix and lower the dry outmix.
Track 2: "SABROX"
Track 2, or the SABROX track, has three Fx, namely ReaFir, ReaComp, and ReaEQ. This track was recorded in my dining room and has relatively similar editing and adjustments to track one, which has two fewer Fx. I adjusted the audio and gain as I found this audio to be a little softer compared to the other microphone recording simultaneously.
Track 3: "MOMDAD"
Track 3, or the MOMDAD track, has three Fx: ReaFir, ReaComp, and ReaEQ. It was recorded in my dining room and has relatively similar editing and adjustments to the two previous tracks. However, after recording it, I found that the microphone picked up quite a lot of background noise. I used the same Fx as the earlier tracks but adjusted it to lower the frequency threshold and be able to filter out more background noise.
Track 2-6: "c1, c2, & c3"
Tracks 4-6 only use the ReaFir and ReaEQ and were recorded in the same place that track 1 was recorded. The only editing that was done was adjusting the Fx to lower background noises, but not too low, so that the little adlibs and the noise of the clapping do not get drowned out. The recording was of three people clapping to make it sound like more of a crowd.
After completing my final project, I still have much room to improve and learn. I want to dive deeper into the world of Reaper and maybe one day become a natural at it. I am satisfied with my final project, but I still have much to improve, maybe later. I have already been looking into some YouTube channels to learn more about editing after this class taught me the basics and acted like a beginner's course into the world of audio recording,, which I very much enjoyed as a serious music fan. I even find myself appreciating editing and production a lot more than I previously have, even on a simple podcast to my new favorite albums.
