Creating this recording was particularly challenging, not necessarily because of the task and requirements themselves but more because of the timing. I have been through two particularly hard and busy weeks that have led me to record my cover the way that I have. To make a long story short, my lola was confined in the hospital last July 28, 2024, due to having a stroke. As she has been oxygen-dependent for the last two years and well past her expected life expectancy battling the sicknesses she had, she sadly never made it home and passed away after a week of being at the hospital. I am not sharing this to earn pity but to make you understand how I got to where I am in terms of my recording. My original plan when I first saw the Assignment 3 submission bin was to do as recommended and make a snip bit or tester session of my final project. However, because the last two weeks have been extremely hectic, I could not find the motivation to begin the assignment. After realizing I would not be able to do my original plan, I came up with some backup plans
For my plan B, I intended to use my circumstance to my advantage and create a three-track recording of a mass song we would be using for one of the wake masses of my lola, with one track being a recording of the crowd singing during the mss, the other of me singing, and the last of a guitar for accompaniment. I did follow through with this and recorded it during one of the masses, but as I tried mixing it with the guitar and my voice, I found that it would be better to go without it and just do multiple tracks of my own voice.
Plan C, or the plan that finally stuck, was just a slight adjustment to plan B. Instead of using my mass recording, I decided to use my voice to create the other tracks. In the end, I had five tracks, with one track being the guitar, one track being the lead vocals, and 3 tracks being backing vocals. Along with my cousin who played the guitar for me, I went to a bathroom that guests were not using and recorded the guitar and vocals. I used a Maono PM421 microphone and my ASUS VivoBook laptop.
After recording the five tracks, I started mixing them and cleaning up the sounds to improve the sound's clarity. I used the ReaEQ and ReaFir plug-ins Fx to reduce the background noise and make the backing vocals more uniform to blend better. I started by mixing the lead vocals, complying with the settings, adjusting the other vocal tracks to have a starting point, and then adjusting the settings per track to match the characteristics of the particular track better. After I adjusted all the plug-ins and Fx in all five tracks, I rendered the final project and uploaded it to my SoundCloud account.
I believe that I am on the right track, as I am quite satisfied with my final recording. Although I would have liked to be able to focus on my output more and have not still been slightly pass at the time of recording, I think I was able to produce a satisfactory mix. I am excited to record and mix my final project and be able to hear my final output.
