Welcome to my Teaching Folio, where I share my journey as an educator and my commitment to fostering a positive learning environment for my students. As a Professor of Infectious Disease, my goal is to inspire and empower the next generation of healthcare professionals.
My teaching philosophy centres on creating an engaging and inclusive classroom that encourages critical thinking and active participation. I believe that education should be a collaborative process, where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and questions. I strive to relate theoretical concepts to real-world applications, enabling students to see the relevance of their studies in practice. My commitment to nurturing curiosity and fostering a growth mindset drives my approach to teaching.
I have had the privilege of teaching at the University of Duhok, where I have lectured across various departments, including Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing. My teaching experience encompasses both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, allowing me to engage with students at different stages of their academic journeys. Throughout my career, I have focused on infectious diseases and microbiology, sharing my expertise and passion for these vital subjects.
I teach a range of topics related to infectious diseases, including but not limited to:
Clinical Microbiology
Pathophysiology of Infectious Diseases
Antimicrobial Resistance
Epidemiology of Tuberculosis
Infection Control and Prevention
These topics not only provide foundational knowledge but also prepare students for practical applications in their future careers.
One of my most memorable teaching experiences was during a workshop on antimicrobial resistance. Students were initially hesitant to engage, but as we delved into case studies and real-life scenarios, the energy in the room transformed. Witnessing their curiosity spark and their willingness to participate in discussions was incredibly rewarding. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of experiential learning and the importance of fostering a dynamic classroom environment.
I prioritize a student-centered approach in my teaching. I encourage students to take ownership of their learning by asking questions and engaging in discussions. By being approachable and supportive, I create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable seeking guidance and sharing their insights. I often incorporate active learning techniques, such as group discussions and problem-based learning, to enhance their understanding and retention of complex concepts.
I am committed to continuous professional development as an educator. I regularly participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences to stay updated on the latest teaching methodologies and advancements in infectious diseases. Engaging with peers and experts in the field allows me to refine my teaching practices and incorporate new ideas into my curriculum. I also seek feedback from colleagues and students to continually improve my teaching effectiveness.
I believe that evidence of teaching effectiveness is essential for reflecting on my practice. Over the years, I have received positive feedback from students regarding my teaching methods and the impact of my courses on their understanding of infectious diseases. Course evaluations consistently indicate high levels of student satisfaction and engagement. Additionally, my commitment to student success is reflected in the academic achievements of my mentees, many of whom have gone on to pursue advanced studies and successful careers in healthcare.

"As a student in Dr. Moayad A. Merza’s infectious disease course, I had a transformative experience that reshaped my understanding of the subject. Dr. Merza's teaching philosophy is rooted in creating an engaging and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and heard. From the very first class, it was clear that he genuinely cares about our learning and growth.
His lectures were not just about memorizing facts; he challenged us to think critically and apply our knowledge to real-world scenarios. I appreciated how he encouraged open discussions, inviting us to share our thoughts and questions. This approach made the material feel relevant and applicable to our future careers.
One memorable moment was when we worked through a case study on antimicrobial resistance. Dr. Merza facilitated the discussion in a way that drew out our insights, guiding us to explore the complexities of the issue. His ability to connect theory with practice inspired me to see the bigger picture and consider the ethical implications of our decisions as future healthcare professionals.
Moreover, Dr. Merza's commitment to our success extended beyond the classroom. He was always approachable, offering support and guidance whenever we needed it. His passion for teaching and dedication to his students made a significant impact on my educational journey, and I feel grateful to have had him as my instructor."
