Welcome to the Department of Agricultural Biology
Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna
Department of Agricultural Biology is one of the largest departments at the faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna, dealing with living organisms. Department offer advanced courses in two different major disciplines such as Plant Protection and breeding and biotechnology. Economic entomology, Basic Microbiology and Phytopathology, Plant Protection, Acarology and Nematology are courses offerd from Plant Protection and discipline, and Cell Biology, Plant Physiology, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Agricultural Biotechnology are from breeding and biotechnology discipline. The key objective of the department is to impart theoritical knowledge and practical skills to undergraduates and post-graduate students, conducting basic and advanced researches, disseminate acquired knowledge to the community, and creating awareness to secure the crops from pest and diseases applying eco-friendly management tactics. Considerable number of practical classes are being conducted in the farmer's fields to expose the students to the real situation and also to interact with farming community.
In addition, Department of agricultural biology is having fully equipped Plant Protection, Biotechnology laboratory funded by the JICA project and Plant pathology and microbiology and Entomology and Nematology laboratories, and vermitechnology and mushroom technology training units funded by the AHEAD project. Moreover, a well-maintained "Model Home Garden" was established through NTRP[NSF funded] to educate farmers to hop up with hunger and ensure food security according to UN sustainable development goals.

Online Equipment Booking Platform
Department of Agricultural Biology has moved to a digital equipment booking platform. Therefore, if you are planning to use the equipment at the JICA building of the Department of Agricultural Biology, please request three working days before on which day you are planning to use it with head approval (The head approval letter is a prerequisite and needed for successful booking). Early booking is more advisable.
