A third-year course, ACH 32021 Soil and Environmental Pollution, was offered at the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna. During the introduction of this course, the course teacher, and Head of the Department, Prof. Mrs N. Gnanavelrajah, induced the students to form a club to contribute to soil and environmental conservation. Consequently, the third year students of the faculty of Agriculture expressed their willingness to establish the Environmental society as a student club, and they met the course teacher and discuss about forming the society. Prof. Mrs. N Gnanavelrajah convened a meeting with the interested students and invited staff of the Department to discuss the matters regarding establishing an Environmental club. The proposal of the students’ society was developed by the course teacher, in consultation with the Faculty board. A competition was held to select the best crest for the society among all the students of the Faculty of Agriculture. Three permanent academic staff teaching soil science, namely, Prof. Mrs. N Gnanavelrajah, Mrs. A. Kirisan and Mrs. K Kajeevan, unanimously selected the crest which was designed by a third-year student. After discussions, the name of the society was selected as the Environmental Association. The proposal of the student society was approved by the Faculty Board and the University of Jaffna at its 243rd meeting.
