The Ethiopian Wolf (Canis simensis) otherwise known as Simien Jackal or Simien fox is native to the area of southeastern Ethiopia highlands. They belong to the Canidae family which makes them closely related to dogs, coyotes and other wolves. They are well known for their reddish/orange fur, pointed ears, bushy tail and their white underbelly. Ethiopian wolf is a key predator in maintaining the population of prey in their ecosystem. The number of Ethiopian wolves has declined due to the destruction of their habitat from the growth of farmlands, roads, and livestock. Another threat is rabies and canine distemper that they come into contact with when exposed to domestic dogs.
