SECURITY POLICIES

UNIS CARD ACCESS / PHOTO ID CARD POLICY

  • The front entrance to UNIS is equipped with turnstiles that operate in conjunction with your UNIS issued Photo ID Card. For those unfamiliar with card access systems, simply place your UNIS issued Photo ID Card up to the reader in place on the turnstile post on your right side as you enter one of the front doors. Prior to placing (swiping) your card, you will see a red horizontal light on the reader, after which it will turn green when the reader “reads" your card. Once the green light appears, proceed through the turnstile. This process should take about 1 second.

The card access system has been designed for ease of use and convenience, while at the same time, enhancing the level of security and safety on the UNIS campus. It does, however, require everyone’s cooperation and participation.

  1. All staff, faculty, parents, and caregivers entering the UNIS campus will use their UNIS issued Photo ID Card at a turnstile. All who enter will use one of the two turnstiles on the left side of the main entrance lobby. To speed up your entry, and to help avoid backups at the turnstile, please have your card already out before you get there.

  2. If you do not have your UNIS issued Photo ID card, you must stop at the Security booth by the Front Gate and inform the Security Officer on duty. At off hours, or during those times when no Officer is present at the booth, you must proceed directly to the main lobby Security Desk to sign in, and inform the Security Officer, who will verify your status and issue you a Visitors Pass so that you can have access to the campus. This pass must be worn at all times while you are on UNIS property, and must be returned to the Security desk when you leave the building.

  3. If your card is lost or stolen, report it to the Security Department as soon as possible. Your lost card will be deactivated and you will be issued a new card. Security can be contacted at 212-584-3001.

  4. Visitors are to go to the Security booth at the Front Gate (or main lobby Security Desk if no one is present at the booth) and show a government-issued photo ID to obtain a Visitor pass that will give them access to the campus. These passes are to be worn and displayed at all times while on UNIS property. UNIS Code of Conduct, printed on the rear of the Visitor Pass, must be adhered to.

  5. Alumni are to visit the UNIS Website https://www.unis.org/alumni and prepare the “Plan your Visit” request. Once approved, Alumni visitors will follow the aforementioned Visitor protocol. Food delivery people should go to either the Security booth at the Front Gate or the main lobby Security desk and check in with the Security Officer on duty. The Officer will then notify the person receiving the delivery who will be required to come to the main lobby Security desk to accept the delivery.

  6. Any UNIS staff member who is expecting an outside group or arranging a special event, please notify Security via e-mail at least 24 hours in advance (when possible) so that Security Officers can expect the arrival of your group. Every courtesy and cooperation will be extended, consistent with established UNIS security and safety policies.

  7. All Visitors, Faculty, Staff, Alumni etc. must swipe OUT when exiting.

Please be advised that any member of the UNIS community who attempts to bypass the card access system or who consistently refuses to display their UNIS issued Photo ID Card will be consulted with regarding the importance of using their cards. Non-UNIS community members who attempt to gain entry to either UNIS campus without following established protocol will be denied access and may be subject to prosecution for trespassing. The following will be considered violations of the UNIS ID Card / Access Control policy;

  • “Tailgating” or following behind someone without swiping.

  • Attempting to enter the building through an exit door or not using your UNIS Photo ID Card.

  • Lending your UNIS Photo ID Card to someone else to swipe, or swiping someone else’s card.

  • While on campus, all members of the UNIS community must display their UNIS issued Photo ID Card.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL

  • JS Students are NOT permitted to exit campus without a parent or authorized caretaker.

  • There is no parking on campus during the school day.

  • Parking for “Special Events” will be first come first serve and the operator of the vehicle MUST have a UNIS ID Badge.

  • Please, refer to the Drop off and Dismissal Protocols for more information.

PERMISSION FOR NEW OR TEMPORARY CAREGIVER

To give permission for a new caregiver to enter UNIS to pick up or drop off your child, please log in to the Veracross Parent Portal at myunis.vc , (->Veracross -> Household Information -> Update Household Profile -> Contacts for My Children-> +Add New->) and enter that caregiver’s name. Add as many additional contacts and caregivers as you need. Then give the contacts Pickup Authorization as needed by clicking on Pickup Authorization on the right and +Add New.

After you enter that information in Veracross, your caregiver can have a UNIS ID made that will allow him/her access to the school to pick up and drop off. In the interim, until the caregiver information is populated by IT to the Security Access card system, fill in this ID Authorization Form, print and sign it, and have the caregiver carry this form along with a photo ID to present to Security at the front gate until a physical UNIS ID card is printed.

However, in temporary situations, there is no need for a UNIS ID card to be issued or a temporary authorization form to be carried. If your caregiver is temporary, or a visiting family member will be picking up or dropping off, please follow the same procedure by adding their name to your Household information in Veracross myunis.vc and have that person(s) be prepared to present a photo ID at the security gate.

In either case, in order to alert your child’s teacher and school security that a new or temporary caregiver has permission to pick up your child, the new or temporary caregiver's full name should be entered in School Dismissal Manager (SDM) as either a "Default" dismissal, "Recurring Exception" or one-time "Exception".

Parents are asked to retrieve and return to the Security team all UNIS ID cards that were issued to caregivers who are no longer employed by the family.

PARKING MEMO

We are all familiar with the traffic challenges in front of our campus every day during drop off and pick up. Recently, the conditions have become worse, making it difficult for our students to safely access the sidewalk. Parents have reported that their children have come close to being hit because of the traffic backups and resulting in improper driving. This is dangerous and we ask for your compliance and help to alleviate the situation.

The service road leading from 23rd Street to the front gate at UNIS is designated by the New York City Department of Transportation as a NO STANDING zone. By New York City Parking Regulations this means that vehicles may only stop to “expeditiously drop off or pick up passengers.”

Consequently, it is ILLEGAL to:

  • Park or stand unattended or attended vehicles along the service road.

  • Stay longer than necessary to pick up or drop off passengers.

  • Load or unload packages.

  • Wait in this zone for any purpose

We ask that all parents and caregivers follow these regulations. The 13th Precinct has already begun ticketing and will conduct regular visits to the area. There is no grace period or allowance for parents dropping their children at UNIS.
