NYC Residents
The New York City Department of Education’s Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) grants free transportation to eligible, registered NYC resident students according to their grade and/or distance from home/stop to school. Kindly refer to the eligibility information at https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/transportation/bus-eligibility.
The transportation options offered by the DOE include the yellow bus service for students from kindergarten to 6th grade, or Metro cards for those whose parents choose not to ride the yellow bus. It also includes Metro cards for all 7th to 12th-grade NYC resident students.
Please note that as children advance from grade J2 to J3, they become ineligible for yellow bus service if they reside in distance code “B” outlined in OPT’s eligibility link (above).
These transportation options are a FREE SERVICE, fully managed by the New York City Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT). Please be aware that the Office of Pupil Transportation reviews all stops and routes every year. Accordingly, there might be some changes in the stops shown in the current schedule. We will update with any changes as soon as we receive notice.
We are always happy to work with parents and the OPT on a case-by-case basis for the best interest of our students.
Non-NYC Residents
For non-NYC resident students living outside the five 5 boroughs of New York, Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Railroad offer students discounted monthly tickets. Please contact us for more information regarding these programs and to assist families living in these areas.
UNIS Students residing in New Jersey are now eligible for 25% discounted student monthly rail passes for NJ Transit. We have been placed on their "accredited schools list" which makes our students eligible for this discount. For more information from NJ Transit please visit https://www.njtransit.com/tickets-students.
Private Transportation Services
There are private transportation services (vans, mini-buses, cars, etc.) used by some UNIS families. The arrangements for these services are the responsibility of parents organizing the transport. The UNIS transportation office does not coordinate these services.
Brooklyn Bus: A private yellow bus service from Brooklyn is being organized by a group of parents. The parent coordinator for this service is: Ms. Charlene Ouahab charlene.ouahab@gmail.com.
Upper East Side: A morning private yellow bus service from the Upper East Side has been organized by a group of UNIS parents. The parent coordinators for this service are: Ms. Celine Armstrong celine.armstrong@gmail.com and Ms. Laila Mignoni lmignoni@bacardi.com
Please contact Transportation for any additional information you may need.
We can be reached at 212-584-3160 or transportation@unis.org.
Note that if your child used yellow bus service in 2022-23, and your home address remains the same, you do not need to complete the form below for 2023-24. This form is only for students who did not use the bus in 2022-23, or new students, or families who moved over the summer.
THIS IS NOT A REGISTRATION FORM FOR THE BUS
JA STUDENTS - YELLOW BUS
We want to do everything possible to ensure that Junior A children who ride the bus have positive experiences. It is important to prepare your child, in advance, by checking to ensure that he/she knows the following:
the route number of the bus
the location where he/she will be getting on the bus in the morning
the location where he/she will be getting off the bus in the afternoon
the person who will be picking him/her up at that stop
Your child should also know that, upon arrival, the bus will discharge passengers at the rear of the school. Your child should proceed directly to the playground after being discharged from the bus.
Please complete the form below no later than September 15 and return it to your child's homeroom teacher. This will let us know that your JA child is ready to ride the bus.
So that your homeroom teacher has your child's dismissal information up to date, please be sure to update SchoolPass in advance of each day to inform whether or not your child will ride the bus.
IF YOUR CHILD IS NOT IN JA, DO NOT FILL OUT THE FORM BELOW
The JA Bus Form 2023-24 below is for your JA teacher's information only.

Your child should also know that, upon arrival, the bus will discharge passengers inside the school. Your child should proceed directly to the playground after being discharged from the bus.
So that your homeroom teacher has an up to date dismissal report at the end of each day, please ensure that by 1:00 pm you have recorded accurate dismissal instructions in SchoolPass.
Your child will not be permitted to ride the bus on any given day unless your instructions to do so appear in the SchoolPass transportation report at dismissal on that school day, see the dismissal protocol.
