Online universities are widespread today, but distance learning solutions are lately becoming more and more popular also in traditional universities. Researchers and academics involved in online teaching are growing in number and research activities on the design of online courses, teaching methodologies, and the assessment in digital learning environments are undergoing a marked increase, and they will become more and more fundamental in the near future. On one hand, online learning methodologies have reached a maturity in terms of theoretical framework and interpretation of the research field outcomes. On the other hand, the exploitation and analysis of educational data, even big data, are becoming a fundamental prerequisite for supporting strategic decisions in several contexts, such as predicting dropouts and improving student experience and success rate.

The HELMeTO Workshops aim at bringing together researchers and practitioners working in Higher Distance Education Institutions or studying Online Learning Methodologies to present and share their research in a multidisciplinary context. The workshop provides a forum for the discussion of new research directions and applications in these fields, where different disciplines could effectively meet.

The First HELMeTO edition was organized by eCampus University 2019 and was held in Novedrate (CO), Italy, on June 6-7, 2019. The post-proceedings Book is available here. The Second HELMeTO edition was organized by the University of Bari, and was successfully held in online mode on September 17-18, 2020. The post-proceedings Book is still being edited.

The Third HELMeTO edition is organized by the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa. The event was planned to be organized on-site in Pisa. However, the organizers of HELMeTO consider the health and well-being of the participants a priority. Thus, since COVID-19 emergency continues, the event will switch to online mode.

HELMeTO 2021 is scientifically sponsored by SIREM, Società Italiana di Ricerca sull'Educazione Mediale and its post-proceedings will be published in Springer Communications in Computer and Information Science book series.
