Lietz's universal school expectations are "P.A.W.S." which we will also follow in room 10.
Students will be encouraged to adopt a growth mindset as higher levels of autonomy will take place this year.
Social-emotional development is held in the same regard as academic and cognitive development.
Life skills will be practiced and promoted throughout the year.
Natural and logical consequences are followed in this classroom.
High comprehension and proficient output will always be the goal, but a good attitude and strong effort are equally as important.
The classroom is not just Mr. Preza's, but all of the students as well. He will consider student feedback, promote democratic actions, and encourage student voice and choice. However, he can always play the "teacher card" if needed 😉
Student learning accountability is supported through a simple class procedure called Correction Station. At the end of most lessons, students will do a quick one to one check in with Mr.Preza and present their work. This system promotes:
Student motivation to stay on task
Instant feedback versus delayed feedback
Opportunities to ensure each student gets individual face time and acknowledgement by the teacher
The teacher having a constant pulse on student comprehension and performance
As part of a classroom management system (and because its fun for kids!), various incentives will be awarded to students. Some rewards will be earned as a class, while individual incentives may be occasionally earned.
These incentives may be more present at the start of the school year to support building a classroom community and for helping individuals acclimate quicker. However, as the year progresses, the goal is to transition away from extrinsic motivation to intrinsic motivation. In other words, our token economy system will gradually fade out of our classroom culture.
Ticket incentives include, but not limited to:
Extra recess
Free choice time
Stickers
Misc. Toys
Examples of how students can earn incentives:
Setting and achieving challenging goals
Random acts of kindness
Exercising the 4 C's (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity)
Exceeding classroom expectations
Using PAWS behaviors
If Mr.Preza is in a really good mood :)
