In designing this curriculum, its creators used a developmental approach that acknowledges the particular needs and challenges that adolescents with anxiety face in joining and participating in a group such as this, or any group. Group members are provided with a safe environment that gently invites them to engage in group activities designed to help them gain an understanding of their own anxiety and to empower them to better navigate their social world. The facilitators of the group will use a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) in leading and guiding the group. This approach is more straightforward than it sounds; its goal is to help people to identify and regulate their emotions so they can live more fully in the moment.

Group norms are essentially the rules that help to guide the group's behavior. The group should establish the norms collectively to ensure that a safe and comfortable environment is established, especially for those members that may have experienced trauma (Zastrow & Hessenauer, 2019).
Norms:
A safe environment for all participants to participate
Ability to express emotion freely and respectfully
Be present
Use active listening
Respect the time of others by being on time to sessions
Confidentiality: What is said in our group, stays in our group
Accept each other without judgement
No rescuing - allow members to work through their emotional discomfort on their own.
Goals:
Gain a better understanding of how to utilize mindfulness practices to regulate emotions during stressful situations
Increased awareness of anxiety
Gain confidence in using coping strategies in anxiety inducing situations
