my concentration.
The UNC at Charlotte Master's in Public Health program offers four concentrations all aimed at/towards "advancing health equity and well-being in an urbanizing world". My concentration, Epidemiology, provides students with a broad understanding of epidemiological principles and their application to public health practices. Coursework within this concentration integrates learning experience, develops quantitative and methodological skills needed to design, and conducts and analyzes epidemiological studies with the goal of students conducting their own epidemiology field investigations.
why epidemiology?
Epidemiology focuses on issues that affect the greatest number of people. Epidemiology educates one on existent health disparities and then works towards problem prevention to minimize existent inequalities.
define.
Epidemiology is defined as a medicine-driven field focused on the incidence, causes, and effects in populations, and patterns within diseases.
Epidemiology can also be defined as the study of distribution, determinants, and patterns of health and disease conditions in specific populations while working towards the establishment of complete health equity.
current studies utilizing epidemiology.
Tackling current, pressing issues interests me deeply. As a person of color and in light of the reawakened racial movements in 2020 being part of teams that prioritize racial equity and racial justice are the projects I most want to be a part of. However, while we are still navigating pandemic living it is extremely important for me to position myself on teams where the active mission is to continue to educate the public on COVID-19 while also working towards improving all facets of an individual's health and wellbeing.
the job market.
The most common job opportunities in the hospital for my master's in Public Health involve/include healthcare worker education, infection tracking, monitor antibiotic use, and documentation of patient-healthcare provider interaction. Furthermore, several state and local government offices and laboratories utilize Epidemiology greatly. These are the two work environments I envision most for myself.
