Module 4
Observations & Analysis
Observations & Analysis
As a reminder, conducting an interview means you are doing Qualitative research.
Now that you have completed your interviews you will look for "Big Ideas" or similarities that are shared between scientists
With a survey or study, you have conducted Quantitative research.
Your task will be to use the numbers you have collected from your survey or study to find patterns in people's behavior. The way we find these patterns is by graphing the numbers.
A literature review is another type of Qualitative research method.
Now that you have read your resources, you will be looking for Big Ideas similarities and possibly differences between the literature you have reviewed.
Finding Big Ideas or Themes in your Data
Did the scientists or papers provide similar examples?
Who is mentioned in their responses?
Who participates in their research or Who is studied?
Who is impacted by the research?
Did the scientists or papers give similar answers to your questions?
What are key or common words found in their answers?
What is being studied?
Where is the research being done?
When did the research begin?
What key messages or conclusions stand out to you?
What are the major findings?
Why is the research question(s) important?
Looking for Patterns in behavior
Description of study participants
Who participated? (No names)
How many?
What ages or grades?
Description of data
How many data points do you have?
What is the range of response values?
What is your primary dependent variable?
What is the variable measured in (e.g., seconds, correct/incorrect)
Summary & analysis of data
What is the average or "mean" of the responses?
Are there differences in average responses between groups or participants?
Before analyzing data with your mentor, check that your data is organized and easy to read
Are all of your responses in one place?
Collect the sheets of data and put them into one folder
Is your data separated by participant?
Check to if you have data responses paired with a participant number
Is your data sorted by participant number?
If possible, sort your data sheets in order of participant number
Do you have answers for each question from each participant?
Is it ok if participants skipped questions?
Highlight or write down which questions were skipped
