Shiman Li is a Ph.D. Apparel Studies student with a minor in Human Factors and Ergonomics. She has a bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering from China. Her design works include robes of the Mongolian ethnic group, crochet works, and user experience design. Shiman has published papers on the topics of Dress History and Costume Design in conferences and journals. She has much experience in teaching Virtual Reality Retailing, Visual Merchandising, Knitting Technology and Dress History. Her research interests include studying textile dragon motifs in ancient China via interdisciplinary approaches.

A Visual Analysis of Conceptual Designs for Fashion Window Displays Using Physical Prototyping and Virtual Reality Design Tools.

This was a collaborative project conducted with Professor Dr. Juanjuan Wu from the College of Design, Scott Spicer, and Charlie Heinz from the Virtual Reality Studio, UMN. Aiming to evaluate the demonstration of design thinking, design ability of students and playfulness of the design work using physical and VR tools in fashion window display design, this project compared students’ design work from two courses regarding visual merchandising. The project was presented at the 2024 Fashion and Play Symposium, Minnesota, United States.

This was a collaborative project conducted with Professor Dr. Marilyn DeLong from the College of Design. Based on two female characters from the Tang Dynasty Dramas in the 1990s in China, this study leveraged Hollander and Tilley’s theories as a framework and analyzed the evolution and appropriation of female characters in the Tang Dynasty Dramas from the 1990s. This study was presented at the 2023 Costume Society of America Midwestern Regional Symposium.

Geometric Shape Development Research of Textiles’ “Frame Outlining Visual Patterns”. Art History of the Silk Road: Youth Researchers Forum in Yangtze River Delta in the Fashion Institute of Donghua University, Shanghai, China.

This was a collaborative project conducted with Professor Yao Chen from the Theatre, University of Massachusetts. This project tried to trace the origin and the evolution of the Frame Outlining Visual Patterns on textiles.
