Current Event: Recent Motor Vehicle Crash
A 64-year-old Detroit man died when he collided head-on with the end of an unanchored metal guardrail on a highway exit (see Figure 4; Fournier, 2017). The crash occurred at approximately 3:15am on Friday, February 10th, 2017. The guardrail pierced through the vehicle from engine to the rear window. Speed was deemed a major factor in his death, which was pronounced on the scene:
"The suggested speed for this ramp is 30 miles per hour," Lt. Mike Shaw said in a statement. “Evidence on the scene points to speeds much higher than that. This crash could have been avoided if the suggested speed limit would have been followed."
– Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police
It is unclear whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the motor vehicle crash.
