The University of Minnesota School of Music Academic Handbook is designed to provide students, faculty, and staff with relevant information regarding studies in the School of Music, but is not a comprehensive document. Students are responsible for all University of Minnesota policies including, but not limited to, policies outlined in the Board of Regents Student Conduct Code. The information in this handbook and other University catalogs, publications, or announcements is subject to change without notice. Our mission at the University of Minnesota School of Music is to understand, share, and disseminate music through creation, performance, research, and education:
We embody and encourage creative and intellectual curiosity at the highest level of artistry and scholarship.
Our distinguished faculty inspires students to be global citizens and agents of transformation through music, realizing this educational work in an integrated and collaborative environment.
Our students develop the knowledge, attitudes, and professional skills to be successful while engaging with the richly diverse, urban, artistic communities in the Twin Cities and beyond.
The School of Music is three interconnected parts. Our academic programs are housed in Ferguson Hall, a state-of-the-art building opened in 1985. Ferguson Hall boasts 70 security-monitored practice rooms, numerous classrooms, a piano lab, an organ studio, an electronic music lab, a music therapy lab, a music technology lab, four chamber music rehearsal rooms, and large ensemble rehearsal rooms for bands, orchestras, opera productions and choruses. We are also the public-facing Ted Mann Concert Hall, a world-class concert auditorium, dedicated in 1993, and overlooking the banks of the Mississippi River. Ted Mann seats 1,126 people with additional standing room and non-fixed seating options, and it offers a full concert programming schedule that includes performances by School of Music ensembles, faculty, and guest artists. Finally, we are the very public-facing Marching and Athletic Bands housed in Huntington Bank Stadium.
Lloyd Ultan Recital Hall, also located in Ferguson Hall, is primarily used for School of Music recitals and master classes. Seating approximately 160, the Lloyd Ultan Recital Hall is an ideal venue for solo recitals, chamber music performances, and master classes.
The Music Library, located on the lower level of Ferguson Hall, is your source for solo and ensemble scores, books and periodicals pertaining to music, CDs, DVDs, LPs, 78s, videotapes, and audio cassettes. The University Libraries also subscribes to a range of digital resources, including streaming audio and video services that can be accessed in the library or remotely. The Music Library also offers listening/viewing equipment, reservable group study space, and open indoor and outdoor areas that can be used for individual study, or for small group meetings or instruction.
