The SIAM Student Chapter at the University of Minnesota holds many events every semester. These events are open to students, both undergraduate and graduate, who are interested in the applications of mathematics. The events fall into three main categories:
Academic
Professional Development
Social and Community Building
Some of our most popular events include the Integration Bee, which we hold every semester, and the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). Additionally, we are proud to help sponsor the Mathematics Project at Minnesota (MPM), a newly developed program at UMN we work on with the help of the School of Mathematics and Women in Mathematics (Associate for Women in Mathematics Student Chapter).
Below, you will find details on the upcoming SIAM events. You can find details on past events here.
We are once again hosting our annual 5-Minute Faculty Research Showcase & Student Search, an event for younger graduate students to learn more about what faculty do in their research. This event will begin with Mathematics faculty members giving a short 5-minute introduction to their research interests. The talks will be followed by a student meet and greet session with refreshments provided. We encourage students without advisors to attend and begin their search for potential advisors.
Date: 3/4 (Mon)
Time: 12:20 - 1:20PM with reception to follow
Location: Vincent Hall 311
This Spring, we are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the SIAM Student Chapter at the University of Minnesota! For the occasion, we will host a few faculty lectures, and we will have past SIAM Student Chapter presidents come back and give 10-minute talks about what they have been doing since graduate school.
Date: 4/3 (Fri)
Time: 3 - 6PM with dinner to follow
Location: TBD
You are invited to participate in an integration bee! It's just like a spelling bee, but instead of spelling words, undergraduate students solve integrals! Prizes will be awarded to finalists, but there's plenty of fun to be had by everyone! If you don't want to be a contestant, you can cheer your friends or help them from the audience! Date: 4/16 (Thurs)
Time: 5 - 6:30PM
