The SIAM Student Chapter at the University of Minnesota is the local branch of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, whose mission is to build cooperation between mathematics and the worlds of science and technology. The SIAM Student Chapter upholds that mission by organizing academic, professional and social events that facilitate cross-disciplinary exposure and networking.
SIAM is an international community of both professionals and students interested in investigating the applications of mathematics in the worlds of science and technology. Founded in 1952 the organization has grown to over 13,000 members including representatives from over 500 academic, manufacturing, research and development, service and consulting, as well as government and military organizations. Since SIAM’s incorporation as a nonprofit organization it has relayed useful mathematical knowledge to other non-mathematical professionals who could then interpret and implement the conveyed mathematical theory for practical, industrial or scientific use.
Our student chapter was established on April 20th, 2010. From the time of its formation, the chapter has attracted graduate and undergraduate members from various departments across the university, including mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, bio-statistics, mechanical engineering, architecture, computer science, neuroscience, aerospace, economics, and evolution, ecology and behavior. We hold a variety of events throughout the year including academic lectures and seminars, professional development workshops, social events, and community outreach opportunities.
