Studies in the Applied Sociolinguistics of
Speech and Language (SASS)

Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at
University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

We study how children and adults learn how to speak in ways that convey their social identity, and how they perceive social and personal identity through speech and language. We study this in numerous ways and in numerous groups: adults with and without hearing loss, and children with and without speech and language problems.

  • We are committed to:
    • Doing work that makes meaningful, positive contributions to the lives of people with and without identified impairments in speech, language, and hearing
    • Helping the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology be more socially just
    • Combatting ableism and linguistic discrimination
    • Following principles of open science
