Does your lab or group want to table at the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) to promote careers in cancer?

1. Step... Contact SMM Andy Kosier, they/them, Programs and Visitor Experience Manager akosier@smm.org, (612) 314-0827  to let them know the date you want to table at the SMM.
   Note: MCC wants to send labs or research groups (not individuals) for this volunteer opportunity.

2. Step... Notify MCC Education & Training that you will be going to the Science Museum of Minnesota and fill out a form. Until the form is created, please contact Emily Kraeske that you plan to table at SMM.
   Note: Even if you have all of the materials you need, we want to know that you will be there. 

3. Step... Go to the Science Museum on the designated day!
   Note: If you need support or help finding volunteers or materials, don't hesitate to contact MCC Education & Training at mccet@umn.edu. 

4. Step...  Report back how your day went and approximately how many people you saw. 

The SMM has extend an invitation for the Masonic Cancer Center to:

• "table with a science activity, 

• provide information about how your organization enacts the values of representation, celebration, and relationships, and to 

• provide career exploration opportunities for visitors."

"Celebration Days serve three main purposes:

1. REPRESENTATION: See yourself in science. Invite visitors and STEM professionals from communities that are underrepresented in STEM to the museum to learn and share together.

2. CELEBRATION: Celebrate the STEM work and resilience of our communities.

3. RELATIONSHIPS: Weave community in many ways - visitors, presenters, and staff. Invite new people in and invest in ongoing relationships

The Masonic Cancer Center has been doing an interactive activity and tabling at Talent Garden / Youth with Stethoscopes for several years. Groups of 4-8 young people rotate between stations for approximately 10 minutes. In this time, you should do an activity for about 7 minutes or so. We have been doing a "Does Vaping Expose You to Harmful Chemicals?" activity using pipettes and similated urine samples. 

For these dates, we may need to have individual volunteers to assist with activities or alternatively, if your lab or research group wants to represent MCC for a date, please reach out to Emily Kraeske and MCC Education & Training (copy mccet@umn.edu). 

The linked events are for young people (ages 12-18) to register. Feel free to share them with people you know.

• December 5, 2026: Asian Youth with Stethoscopes

• January 23, 2027: Black Youth with Stethoscopes

• April 17, 2027: American Indian Youth with Stethoscopes

If you know of young people ages 12 – 18 who are interested in careers in healthcare, encourage them to go to talent garden. It's an excellent exploration of health careers. For MCC, we're trying to show the range of careers in research. 

Achieve Twin Cities has a volunteer interest form. We encourage cancer researchers of all levels and stages to sign up directly to work with Achieve Twin Cities. 

• NOTE: When submitting the form, under "Please share briefly why you are interested in volunteering with Achieve Twin Cities.", we recommend that you indicate the type of research that you do. Achieve Twin Cities has had the tendency to think that all of the work we do at MCC is healthcare. So be sure to emphasize if you are doing lab research (they may not understand "basic science"), population or statistical studies, transational research from laboratory to the public, clinical research, or community research, etc. 

When you do, please indicate that you're connected with cancer research and the Masonic Cancer Center.
