Institutional Responsibilities

The Graduate Medical Education Office (GME)

The University of Minnesota appoints fellows to successfully complete their graduate medical education training program. GME supports our fellowship program, so that we can offer the best possible training environment and educational opportunities.

The responsibilities of the Institution are spelled out in the Graduate Medical Education Program Fellowship Agreement and the provisions of the GME Institution and Program Policy Manual referenced in this Agreement govern the relationship between the individual fellow and the University, and take precedence over any other University document or procedure to the extent they are inconsistent with the terms of this statement.

These responsibilities include

  • providing a graduate medical educational experience and training program through faculty planning, teaching, supervision, and evaluation of residents/fellows.

  • performing administrative functions for the benefit of the fellows.

  • providing benefits to the fellows

  • establishing general policies on duty hours/on-call schedules, moonlighting, and the effect of absences on timely completion of the residency/fellowship program

The Institution Manual is designed to be an umbrella policy manual. Some programs may have policies that are more tailored to their needs than the Institution Manual in which case the program policy will be followed. Should a policy in a Program Manual conflict with the Institution Manual, the Institution Manual will take precedence.
