Michael D. Minta is an Associate Professor in Political Science at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is one of the country’s leading experts in the study of the political representation of African American and Latino interests in the United States Congress. His book, Oversight: Representing Black and Latino Interests in Congress is a valuable guide that scholars, political leaders, and the legal community consult when assessing whether diversity in legislatures improves responsiveness to minority interests.
Ciara A Terry
Ciara Terry is a junior studying Political Science with a minor in Educational Studies at Spelman College. Ciara was born and raised in Tinton Falls, New Jersey but currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland. Ms. Terry has a passion for education justice and public policy. She has expressed her desires through a series of endeavors such as volunteerism, political campaigns, and service in the Atlanta-Vine City Community and throughout Northern Maryland. Ms. Terry has worked alongside a national presidential campaign (Bernie 2020), gubernatorial campaign (Stacey Abrams 2018), and a non-partisan judicial campaign (Shermela Williams Superior Court Judge 2020), where she accrued fundamental knowledge of the voting process and the implications of votingdisenfranchisement of marginalized communities. Ms. Terry is excited about sharing her experience and expertise in electoral politics and ready to participate in the discourse surrounding the conflict of voting in the black community.
Ty Hobson-Powell
Ty Hobson-Powell (25) is a native Washingtonian and lifelong community advocate. After graduating from high school at 13, he went on to become the youngest student to ever matriculate at Howard University in its history. After gaining his Bachelor's degree at age 15 from the University of Baltimore and his Master’s degree at 17 from Liberty University, Ty began his career in public service with DC’s Dept. of Employment Services availing supports to some of the District’s most disadvantaged residents through his work with MBSYEP, @OYPDC & @OfficialMBYLI. He also worked for Hillary for America in the 2016 presidential election as a field organizer in Erie, Pennsylvania. Currently, Ty serves as Co-Founder and Director of Policy for @ConcernedCitizensDC, Civic Engagement Coordinator for @UniversityOfDC, and is a lead organizer with the @51For51 D.C. statehood campaign.
Robert Brown
Robert Brown was Assistant Professor in Political Science at Spelman from 2013 to 2020. He was awarded tenure in 2020 and became Associate Professor in Political Science. He is a graduate of Brown University (a BA in History in 1985), the University of Michigan (a PhD in Political Science in 1996), and Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health (a MSPH in epidemiology in 2011). He taught previously in the Department of Political Science and theProgram of African-American Studies at Emory University. Dr. Brown’s areas of expertise in his research and teaching are: data analysis and research methods, American politics, African-American politics, race and American political development, and urban politics. His research has been published in the following journals: The DuBois Review,International Journal of Disability and Human Development, The Journal of Politics, National Political Science Review, and Urban Affairs Review. He is currently completing a book manuscript tentatively entitled Black Cities, American Dilemmas: Race and Representation in Urban America. Dr. Brown is a co-editor, with Todd Shaw and Joseph McCormick, of the forthcoming book, After Obama: African-American Politics in a post-Obama Era.
Sean Lim
Sean Lim (he/him/his) is an undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, pursuing a dual degree program in Environmental Sciences, Policy, Management (ESPM) and Political Science. He has mobilized MN voters for local campaigns and organizations alike. Sean currently serves as Lead Campus Organizer at UMN for the non-profit Minnesota Youth Collective. In this role, he provides young voters on and off campus with the tools and information they need to successfully participate in our elections. MNYC empowers and builds the political power of young people through issue campaigns, GOTV initiatives, fellowships, and more. During the 2020 Presidential Primaries, as Co-Chair of Students for Bernie at UMN, Sean coordinated a student group which worked hard and organized to win all 11/11 precincts at the University of Minnesota - averaging a resounding 63.5% of the total campus vote.
