The Mark of Excellence recognizes a College of Veterinary Medicine faculty member with outstanding contributions to generating and sharing new knowledge related to the veterinary profession.  Please join us in congratulating our 2023 awardee, Dr. Alonso Guedes.

Dr. Alonso Guedes, DVM, MS, PhD

Board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist and Associate Professor within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences , Dr. Alonso Guedes, DVM, MS, PhD is interested in understanding how calcium and lipid signaling are involved in chronic disease biology. Diseases of interest include osteoarthritis, laminitis and asthma. 

Dr. Guedes holds the rank of tenured Associate Professor and he has proven himself to be a valuable asset across research, service and education missions. Dr. Guedes is highly regarded by his colleagues, students and trainees. He is dedicated to the development of new therapies for treating chronic pain, particularly for osteoarthritis, and also is an expert in pulmonary function. This past fall, Dr. Guedes’ PhD student received a travel award to present at the 2022 Society for Neuroscience Annual Conference. In collaboration with Washington State University and Columbia University, Dr. Guedes is a co-investigator on a $23 million dollar UG3 grant from the NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to work on the clinical development of anti-fentanyl monoclonal antibodies. In collaboration with Columbia University and Coridea (a biotech company), Dr. Guedes is also a co-investigator on a $9 million UG3 grant from NIDA to work on a community deployable Automated External Respiration System device that is capable of maintaining adequate respiration in individuals experiencing respiratory depression induced by opioid overdose. These are in addition to three other active awards totaling $650,000 and three peer-reviewed publications. Internally, Dr. Guedes received the 2022 CVM internal capacity award for, Understanding the role of cyclooxygenase isoforms and soluble epoxide hydrolase in chondrocyte. Clinically, Dr. Guedes is an integral part of the anesthesia team onboarding new clinicians, treating patients, teaching residents and interns on clinical rotations, and collaborating with the Medical School anesthesiologists on a variety of projects. Dr. Guedes is well known and highly regarded at the University of Minnesota and nationally for his expertise in animal models of chronic pain.
