Focused Conversation & World Cafe
Day 2 of the community conversation will use two facilitation concepts.
Focused Conversation
The first discussion activity is a SWOT analysis using the focused conversation method using the ORID (Objective, Reflective, Interpretive, and Decisional) structure. The purpose of a focused conversation is to collect ideas, reflect, and share to the larger group. Using the co-created creative economy framework from Day 1, participants are asked to:
a) Objective: recall what they know about the creative economy
b) Reflection: reflect on the strengths, challenges, opportunities, and barriers of the creative economy
b) Interpretive: interpret with a group
c) Decisional: share out to the larger group to brainstorm strategies to address the results of the conversation
World Cafe
The World Cafe is an interactive facilitation method that fosters collaborative dialogue and knowledge gathering among large groups. This method is great for the second discussion activity of Day 2 to get participants moving around tables and boost energy levels after the previous hour long activity. In the second activity, participants are asked to brainstorm a list of indicators to measure Duluth's creative economy in a series of 10 minute rounds that are divided into four categories: economic, social, environmental, and other.
The World Cafe method:
Creates a dynamic space for participants to engage in conversation with others in each category
Encourages individual contribution
Emphasizes the sharing and connecting of ideas and insights between each round of conversation among the categories (which are not exclusive)
Allows for reconvening at the end to discuss indicators
Usually the World Cafe method is implemented by creating a cafe-like environment with food and snacks at each table and table covers. However, it is not technically required.
