Students are able to schedule courses in MEdIS, which shows their plans to take various courses for an entire year. Although the course is on their schedule and course personnel may be planning for that student, registration for that course may happen at a later time. MEdIS sends scheduling information through to the University system during the current semester so that the student can be registered. Students are asked to pay attention to prerequisites and add/drop deadlines when scheduling courses.
View add/drop deadlines here.
This is the date by which students will be allowed to make any changes for a particular period. After this date, students must get permission to add or drop or move courses covered by this deadline. A list of the add/drop deadlines can also be found on the scheduling tab in MEdIS, using the drop down for “add/drop deadlines” on the side.
Approval emails for late adds and late drops must be uploaded in the schedule change request form in order to be reflected on your schedule.
Late add approvals are granted by the course coordinator. The approval must be submitted in the schedule change request form no later than 10 business days prior to the start of the course due to administrative processes that must be completed in relation to registration.
Lade drop approvals are granted by the Clinical Education Manager (lope0165@umn.edu). Late drop approvals are only valid for 2 business days so students will need to request a new approval if they delay in submitting the approval. Requests to late drop must be submitted with documentation of approval in the schedule change request form prior to the course start date.
Late schedule changes submitted without approval will not be considered.
View capacity report here.
There are a certain number of available slots per course, per period and per site. Capacity can be accessed from either clicking on a period in MEdIS and viewing the course or by going to the course directory and searching by course. Each course will have a link to the capacity per school year. *Note that students may have to choose the correct year in the drop-down of this report.* This report should refresh automatically, but students may also press refresh at the bottom left corner of the report to see the most up-to-date information. Below are terms that are used on these pages.
Course is at Capacity: when this message appears next to a course, this means that there is no more capacity in that course for that particular period.
Site is Full: One specific location for this course is full; there may be additional capacity at other sites for that period.

The course directory has detailed listings for all clerkships available to students. The fields at the top can be used to filter results and find options in a specific department, courses offered during a specific semester, or courses that meet a specific credit requirement. The page for a specific clerkship will have contact information for the Course Director and Course Coordinator, a link to current capacity, and the course syllabus.
If students are interested in which clerkships are offered in Duluth or St. Cloud, they can also reach out to Joann Scozzari (scozj@umn.edu). These courses are also listed in the course directory and searchable via filters.

Students will have unscheduled flexible time (in addition to school breaks) across the Clinical Immersion and Specialty Specific Transitions Phases. This time can be used for residency interviews, study time for USMLE exams, vacation, and research. Students who are in a lane can view their flex blocks in the lanes document for their class.

Credits are offered in set blocks of either 2, 4, or 8 weeks in length
For requesting clerkship schedule changes that students cannot make themselves in MEdIS, students must submit a request via the Schedule Change Request Form. There is a section in the form to attach documents if approvals are needed. Students should expect to receive a response within 3-5 business days.

View Site Codes Table here.
Each course has a scheduling code listed next to the clerkship name, which represents the location a student will be at for the course. Students can check the course directory or the site codes table to see which site the code refers to for a particular clerkship. Students may choose a specific site for many of the elective courses.
For core lane clerkships, students may be assigned to AS-1000 (Twin Cities), CC-1000 (CentraCare) or DU-1000 (Duluth) sites.
In cases where these place holder site codes are used, specific site placements will be made after the add/drop deadlines pass for the periods in which they are scheduled.
Read the site placement process for required clerkships here.
Registration signifies that a student is enrolled in a course in the University system in addition to being scheduled for the course in MEdIS. Once a student is registered, the course will appear on their unofficial/official transcript in MyU. Although the schedule is based on periods, registration happens on a semester basis, similar to undergraduate courses. Courses will not show up on a student's transcript until the semester that they are scheduled to complete them. Students are responsible for making sure that scheduling matches registration. Please ensure that you are checking your scheduled courses in MyU on a regular basis to ensure that you are registered correctly. You can find your scheduled courses in the Academics tab.
Please note, holds on your student account may prevent you from being registered. Please pay attention to communication from the Medical School registrar and resolve your holds as quickly as possible.
In order to be eligible for and access student resources, students may need to be registered for a minimum required number of credits.
3 credits per semester--Students are eligible for federal financial aid. Some loans and scholarships require full-time enrollment of 6 credits per semester.
6 credits per semester--Students are eligible for University health insurance and University student services.
