Master Credits Breakdown

Plan A (Thesis with final exam)

-Total Minimum Credits: 30

-Course Credits: 12-20 credits – A minimum of 12 credits must be taken at the University of MN

-Thesis Credits: 10 credits

-Transfer Credits: up to 8 credits (not required)


Students are not required to take credits outside of the department or transfer credits in. All credits for your degree can be CEGE credits.

Plan B (Project with final exam)

-Total Minimum Credits: 30 credits

-Course Credits: 20-30 credits – A minimum of 20 credits must be taken at the University of MN

Plan C (Coursework only)

-Total Minimum Credits: 30 credits

-100 project hour requirement

-2 hours ethics training

-10 minute oral presentation

-Two - 8xxx level courses are required

Understanding the Breakdown….


Course credits and Thesis credits

-Registered while a degree-seeking U of MN student in your program

-Course credits start the first semester of matriculation

-Unique to the graduate program

-Graduate level courses are 5xxx and 8xxx level courses

-Can include 4xxx level course credits subject to the 4xxx rule

-A maximum of nine 4xxx level course credits may be used to satisfy degree requirements

-Partial credits from a course are not accepted


-Thesis credits must be taken at the U of MN

-Thesis credits can be taken during any semester

Transfer credits

-Non-degree seeking from the University of MN

-Transfer from another institution

-Taken in another graduate program (i.e., credits in common (8))

-Graduate – level credits taken in the undergraduate program*

*(Undergraduate coursework is only allowed if the student is able to provide evidence (in the form of a letter from the undergraduate advisor or university) stating that the course(s) to be transferred (1) was not necessary for the undergraduate degree and (2)that the work done was at a graduate level.)


To use apply transfer courses to your program - there is a form that will be in the forms section that needs to be filled out and signed by your advisor and turned into the graduate programs coordinator along with the unofficial transcript the courses are coming from.
